A Moving Address!

No, dear friend...

...not that moving address.

What I'm saying is that Mrs. Shady
and I are moving to a new address.

No... not that address...

This address:

What I am really trying to tell you is that
I need to take another break from blogging
because we are moving. Packing, cleaning,
moving, unpacking and getting set up at our
new residence will take several weeks and
I need to focus on getting it all done.

The bad good news is that I plan to be
back to blogging sometime next month.
Even badder better news is that,
when I return, I will bring you:

GREAT NEWS!

Take care and I will see you
in a few weeks, dear friend!

Happy Birthday, Helen!

This is a very special occasion.

 Helen Trostle Ettline

was born 107 years ago

on January 9, 1911.

Every evening Helen was stationed behind
the counter of the Shady Dell snack bar
preparing treats to feed the masses.

As she worked, a steady stream of 1950s
doo-wop records played on the jukebox.

Let's celebrate Helen's birthday by
listening to one of her favorite songs,
the ballad "Two People in the World"
by Little Anthony and the Imperials,
a Dell classic from the summer of
1958, the one that I have come
to think of as "Helen's Song."

 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, HELEN!

We love you and miss you!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

WELCOME BACK FOR ANOTHER

"INTERESTING" YEAR ON SDMM.

Interesting is an understatement. Sometime
this year, I won't say when, I will spring
upon you the biggest surprise in the
history of the blog. Stick around.

Again this year I will be spanning the globe
to bring you the constant variety of music,
the thrill of R & B... and the agony of
death metal... the human drama of my
followers heading for the exit in droves.

To kick off 2018 I now present 5 great songs
by 5 exciting artists - some old, some new.
How many of them do you know?

 THE SUPREMES

You are about to witness an amazing scene,
a long lost piece of film showing Diana Ross
and The Supremes performing an obviously
illegal and risky improvisational lip sync to
"Where Did Our Love Go," their first #1
charting single. The Motown girls sang
their international hit while dodging
moving vehicles on what appears to
be a city street in London. This is
one of the most exciting clips
I have ever discovered!

"Where Did Our Love Go" - The Supremes
(Aug. 1964, highest chart pos.
#1 Hot 100/#1 Cash Box/#3 UK)

 SKYLAR STECKER

Returning to SDMM for an encore, here is former
Tampa Bay resident Skylar Stecker, the singing
sweetie I crowned Pop Star of the Year for 2016.
Skylar does a lip sync performance much like the
one you watched by The Supremes. The video
was shot in real time with one camera and in
one continuous take - no edits. Watch Skylar
strolling through the heart of Hollywood,
bopping down the Boulevard, as she
performs one of her latest singles,
a song that reached #1 on the U.S.
dance chart - "Only Want You."

"Only Want You" - Skylar Stecker
(March/April 2017, highest
chart pos. #1 U.S. Dance)

 KRISTINE BLOND

In my previous post, New Year's Rockin' Eve,
you met Danish songstress Christine Milton.
Now here'd another Danish delight by the
name of Kristine Blond, best known for
the the 1998 single "Love Shy" which
brushed the top 20 on the UK chart.

"Love Shy" - Kristine Blond
(1998 single, highest chart pos.
#22 UK, from 2001 album
All I Ever Wanted)

 KARMA ft.

 PRECIOUS MINOR

Now meet Karma, an exciting R&B girl trio
from Memphis known for their Anti-Bully
Touring and high energy performances.
Karma, featuring guest rapper Precious
Minor, will do their interpretation of the
Missy Elliott hit "Gossip Folks," a song that
heavily samples "Double Dutch Bus," the
funky single by Frankie Smith that topped
the Soul chart in 1981. "Double Dutch Bus"
was inspired by a children's jump rope game
and by rides on the city bus in Philadelphia.
The lyrics include a form of inner city slang
known as izzle, used by African Americans
and similar to Pig Latin. Listen for it as these
talented kids sing the song. What goes around
comes around and Karma's comin' to your town!

Dance by Miesha Michelle)

 RAY CHARLES

 AND HIS ORCHESTRA

Finally, to send us on our way as we begin our
march through the year 2018, here's The Genius,
Ray Charles, along with featured female vocalist
Margie Hendrix, leader of The Raelettes, with
their #1 smash hit single from the fall of 1961,
an up tempo ditty found on on Rolling Stone's
list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time
"Hit The Road Jack."

"Hit The Road Jack"
Ray Charles And His Orchestra
(Oct. 1961, highest chart pos.
#1 Hot 100/#1 Cash Box/#1 R&B)
