Meet the Modern Material Girls!

Welcome to part 6 of my 12-part series

profiling the post-millennials at the

forefront of today's pop music scene

and the rising stars of tomorrow.

You met brash and sassy English singer
Jessie J earlier this summer in my post
 ...They're Busy Conquering the World.

In 2011, Jessie's up tempo stormer "Domino"
was released as the 5th single from her debut
studio album, Who You Are, becoming her
second #1 UK single. "Domino" was a
dance club hit in the U.S., cracking
the top 10 on that specialty chart.

"Domino" - Jessie J
(Jan. 2012, highest chart pos. #1 UK
#6 Hot 100/#1 US Dance Club Songs
from Feb. 2011 album Who You Are)

My 5 year old granddaughter loved her
as Angela on the children's television
series Barney & Friends.

Now all grown up, Demo Lovato is one of
the most recognized names in music today
and winner of numerous awards. In 2015
Demi released "Cool for the Summer,"
lead single from her album Confident.

Confident reached #2 on the Billboard 200 and
"Cool for the Summer," a pop rock song with
sexually suggestive lyrics and bi-curious
implications, was an international hit,
certified platinum in the U.S. "Cool"
brushed the top 10 on the Hot 100
and hit #1 on the U.S. Dance
Club chart. This track cooks!

"Cool For the Summer" - Demi Lovato
(July/Aug. 2015, h.c.p. #11 Hot 100
#1 US Dance Club Songs/#1 Greece,
from Oct. 2015 album Confident)

Demi Lovato (below left) was Angela
on seasons 7 and 8 of Barney & Friends.

Selena Gomez (above right) had the role
of Gianna during that same time period.

Like Demi, Selena went on to become one
of the biggest names in show business.

Earlier this year, "Hands To Myself,"
the third single from Selena's hit
2015 album Revival, peaked at #1
on the U.S. Mainstream Top 40 chart.
Like many of today's pop recordings,
"Hands To Myself" simmers for a while,
percolates, then erupts into an up tempo
dance beat. The arrangement reminds
me of the Prince single "Kiss" and the
video, showing Selena in handcuffs
and clad in lingerie, is the idol's
sexiest performance to date.

"Hands To Myself" - Selena Gomez
(Mar. 2016, highest chart pos.
#1 U.S. Mainstream Top 40,
 #4 Canada, #5 New Zealand,
from Oct. 2015 album Revival)

Fifth Harmony is a Miami based pop/R&B
girl group formed in 2012 from five soloists
who competed on The X Factor USA. In the
fall of 2013, Fifth Harmony released their
debut EP Better Together followed by the
full length album Reflection in early 2015.

Better Together peaked at #6 on the Billboard 200
and Reflection made the top 5. "BO$$," the lead
single from Reflection, is a song about female
empowerment. The style of the recording and
video reflected the more mature image that
Fifth Harmony intended to present.

"BO$$ (BOSS) - Fifth Harmony
(July/Aug. 2014, highest chart pos.
#43 Hot 100/#12 Scotland, from
Jan. 2015 album Reflection)

Now meet British singer, songwriter,
rapper and model Cher Lloyd.

"With Ur Love" is a song from Cher's
2011 debut studio album Sticks + Stones.
Featuring guest vocals by Detroit singer
Mike Posner, "With Ur Love" penetrated
the top 30 on the US Mainstream Top 40
and went top 5 in the UK, Ireland and
Scotland.  Cher recorded a solo version
of the song and made separate videos,
one for release in the UK and this
one released in the U.S.

"With UR love" - Cher Lloyd
(Oct. 2011/solo ver. Aug. 2012,
highest chart pos. #1 Ukraine,
#3 Scotland/#4 UK/#5 Ireland,
#27 U.S. Mainstream Top 40from
Nov. 2011 album Sticks + Stones)

It's time once again to take the Fifth
as we bring today's show to a close.

"Worth It," the third single from the
Fifth Harmony album Reflection, features
a rap performance by L.A. R&B/hip hop
artist Kid Ink and is flavored with South-
astern European Balkan beats. "Worth It"
was an international hit, brushing the
top 10 on the Hot 100, cracking the
top 5 in the UK and hitting #1 in
Israel, Lebanon and Mexico.

"Worth It" - Fifth Harmony ft. Kid Ink
(Mar./Apr. 2015, h.c.p. #12 Hot 100,
#4 US Mainstream Top 40,
#1 Israel, Lebanon & Mexico,
from Jan. 2015 album Reflection)

I hope you enjoyed meeting these modern
material girls. Stay tuned for more post-
millennial music, madness and mayhem
coming your way soon in part 7!

Have a Shady day!

  1. 5 star performances from every one of these modern material girls, Shady! My favorites among them are Jessie J— Demi Lovato— and Cher Lloyd— because those three women put the most fun, excitement and style into their songs— and especially their videos. I remember our young granddaughter watching Barney whenever she came to visit us— but I had no idea Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez were on that show. I immediately recognized them in those old pictures. How interesting!

    1. Hi, Kathryn!

Thanks for reporting in as I present the Modern Material Girls of pop.

I'm delighted to know you enjoyed this song set. Like you I had no clue that Demi and Selena started out as cast members on Barney but, seeing those old production stills from the series, I instantly recalled their characters. (I'm pretty sure that Barney went on to become Justin Bieber :)

Thanks again for joining the pop party, dear Kathryn, and let's have a great weekend!

  2. Early morning, low census day greeting Shady! I was pleased to realize I actually knew a few of these artists and the songs. I was pleased also to like the ones I'd never heard before..Cher and Jesse J. Wow, the Barney girls sure grew up to be beauties and talent. I don't think we could compare them to the kiddos from the Mickey Mouse club can we? Fun videos that I'm sure have turned Barney from purple to red! Frankly, he deserves it. Thanks for a good start to my 3 day weekend..hope yours is good too!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thank you very much for popping over early this morning, dear friend! I'm happy to know you have a low census day and have started a three day weekend. I hope the weather cooperates up there. Our skies are black at this hour!

In my research for this year long series I was surprised by the number of fine English artists who are cranking out dance-pop and rap. Jessie J and Cher Lloyd are two exciting examples and I have more coming.

Yessum, our little granddaughter hogged the TV set whenever she visited and I was forced to watch many episodes of Barney and Friends with her (along with Teletubbies, Sponge Bob and other such shows.) Looking back, Barney the Dinosaur was an excellent role model with an important message for people of all ages. He urged us to treat each other with kindness and respect rather than hate and to accept and appreciate people of other races and beliefs.

Yessum, these flashy, sexy performances by modern pop idols are light years removed from the innocent songs and dances the kids performed on The Mickey Mouse Club of the 50s. What will pop music look and sound like 50 years from now? EEEEK!

It was my pleasure to introduce you to new artists and songs and to provide that piece of trivia about Demi and Selena - something even I didn't know until I did my research for the series.

Enjoy your long weekend, dear friend YaYa, and thank you again for your friendship and support!

  3. My, a couple of those little girls really grew up! If you looked at Demi as a kid, you would never know she'd grow up to look like that.

    1. Hi, Alex!

Thanks for dropping by, good buddy!

I vividly recall watching little Demi Lovato as "Angela" on Barney & Friends and Selena Gomez as Gianna. Ironically, that's my granddaughter's name. The transformation of those two girls into the glamorous women they are today is truly remarkable.

Thanks again for your visit and comment, good buddy Alex, and have a great weekend!

  4. Hi Shady. I know any of these artists but I did recognize the song Worth It by Fifth Harmony. I also liked Cool for Summer by Demo Lovato (she was cute as a little girl!) and Selena's Hands to Myself.
I found it interesting that two of the Barney kids ended up in successful music careers.

Have a great weekend my friend!

    Michele at Angels Bark

    1. Hi, Michele!

How are you, dear friend? Thanks for coming by!

I'm delighted that you called attention to Fifth Harmony, represented in this post by two of their hit recordings. "Worth It" is used as the jingle in the national TV spot for Hershey's Caramels. With their new album 7/27 which debuted in the top 5 on Billboard, and their hit single "Work From Home," Fifth Harmony is riding a wave of popularity at home and abroad. The Fab Five are currently in the midst of their third concert tour - The 7/27 Tour - which is taking them through South America, North America and Europe this summer and fall.

Yessum, Barney's girls made good, that's for sure. I'm glad you like their very grown up hit records. As you might recall, Demi Lovato appeared at the Democratic National Convention a couple of weeks ago.

Thank you again for your kind visit and comments, dear friend Michele, and enjoy your weekend!

    2. I watched a lot of the DNC but missed Demi! So glad that she's on the right team... :)

    3. Hi, Michele!

Welcome back, dear friend! Didn't you mean to say that Demi is on the "left team" rather than "right team"? :) I remember months ago you mentioned in a comment somewhere that you and a good friend were on opposite sides of the political aisle. All this time I have been wondering which camp you are in and now it seems you are letting me know. I won't tip my hand because I try to remain neutral here on SDMM and keep genuine friends on both sides. Instead I will merely return your smile with one of my own. Make that THREE of my own!

      :) :) :)

I wish you, your parents and your fur babies a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Michele!

    4. Lol. Yes, I should've said the Left team... Touche!

  5. Hey Shady,
I was familiar with all the girls posted today. That's a first for me. LOL
Selena is from Dallas and one of my dear friends sons- was in a movie years ago with her. It never made it big but they still have the movie poster up in their house.
I like the song that Demi does with country star Brad Paisley. I thought it would be a weird match but i like it.

    1. Hi, Holli!

Thank you very much for coming over, dear friend!

I'm delighted to find out that you already knew all of these artists. That's probably a first for this series!

Gosh almighty - I love that Paisley - Lovato duet, and so did the vast majority of the people who commented on YouTube, both on the lyric video you linked to and the official music video which I also watched. Comments such as these are typical in their admiration of Demi's versatility: << Pop, Rock, Jazz, RnB, Ballad, Country, what else Demi? REAL TALENT <3 >> I totally agree. Demi is the real deal. She has soul and the ability to perform authentically in a variety of categories including that great country song. Thanks again for turning me on to it, dear friend Holli. Take care of yourself and have a great weekend!

  6. I liked the Jessie J song! She put me a little in mind of Kimbra...

Demi Cool for The Summer- without getting into PC and lyrical dissertations, it was very well listenable. Especially towards the end as she stretched the vocals. Also, the most "visually appealing " of the ladies.

Selena... well, that one fell just a bit flat for me.

Fifth Harmony #1 wasn't terrible, but it got interrupted by a phone call. My son is getting admitted to the hospital with an inflamed colon. Anyway, FH not my usual metier, but it wasn't bad.

Cher Lloyd- pretty good. #1 in the Ukraine? Funny how things work...

I didn't mean to offend with short comments on the last music post. I get my opinion isn't the be all and end all, and saw no reason to spoil the fun by giving bad reviews just because it didn't tickle MY ears. That's why.

FH #2- I like this one a bit better. I'll have to go "first song on the post" as best for me.

    Nice job, Party Boy!

    1. Hi, Chris!

Thanks for joining the fun, good buddy. First and most importantly, I hope your son is going to be AOK. I'm sorry to learn that he has colitis.

Secondly, don't worry about it. Sometimes when I get a bunch of brief, generic comments on a post that tell me people are glossing over the content and aren't giving the songs/artists a fair chance, I get a little pissy, but it isn't a friendship deal breaker unless a follower keeps on doing that for months on end. Here's the thing. Most of these pop recordings are like Selena's. They start slowly and quietly, build in intensity, then pull the trigger and get the full loudness and up tempo dance beat going. All you need to do is wait until you get to the phat part in the middle of the recording before making up your mind about it. That's all I ask.

Well, I'm glad your ears matched mine on the Jessie J number and that you gave a qualified thumbs up to Demi and seemed to like Cher Lloyd, too. Ha! I just realized your favorites match Mrs. Shady's!

Thank you again for making time for a visit and for taking time to listen to the tunes, good buddy Chris. I wish your son all the best and I hope you and Laurie and Scrappy have a restful weekend! (Don't forget my next post on the 12th!)

  7. These ae all fine singers/ artists, friend Shady ... sadly me do not watch TV at all cuz of all da foul language floatin around and so, me guess, me is missin out of da guuud stuff as well ... o, well ... guuud will find me ... no matter what ...Love, cat.

    1. I invested much money in Billy ...4 no return ...still fascinated but not ... ya ... Love, cat

    2. Hi, cat!

How are you, dear feline friend? :) Thank you for coming down!

I discovered all of these artists on YouTube, not on TV. In other words, I didn't/don't watch The X Factor, The Voice, American Idol, DWTS or any of those other contest shows. (However, I did see Demi Lovato at the Democratic National Convention - YAY!!!)

I agree that if you make it a rule to avoid one form of media or another you end up missing the guuud along with the bad. I have learned to trust my filters to screen out the bad and let in the guuud.

I'm thrilled to know that you recognize the talent of these female singers and dancers. Thank you for linking to the Cyndi Lauper song "Time After Time." It is a favorite of mine and the official video was played in heavy rotation on the MTV station where I worked in the 80s.

Thank you again for joining the fun, dear friend cat, and have a wonderful weekend!

    3. I enjoyed that live performance of "Life No. 9" by Billy Klippert. Thank you for introducing that talented Canadian singer/songwriter, dear friend cat!

  8. A lot of good talent here. I am familiar with Selena and Demi, but I didn't know about their show biz history--interesting stuff. I recall seeing Fifth Harmony on X Factor. The other artists were new to me.

    Tossing It Out

    1. Hi, Lee!

When I began work on this series close to a year ago, I knew the names Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez and I had watched Selena's dramatic acting performance in the movie Spring Breakers. I didn't know the other artists. It was exciting to find out that Demi and Selena are Barney alumni and a pleasant surprise to discover these two excellent Brit poppers, Jessie and Cher.

      Thanks, Lee!

  9. Tom, great line up of modern material girls. For once, I've heard of all of your artists....well, except for British singer Cher Lloyd. If you haven't started watching The Dusk To Dawn TV series Demi Lovato is in the 3rd season. Have tunetastic weekend, my friend, and keep that music comin'!

    1. Hi, Cathy!

Thank you very much for swinging over for the latest installment of my year long pop series.

I'm happy to know you were already familiar with most of these female acts. I hope you enjoyed meeting Brit girl Cher Lloyd who will be back in future posts.

A few days ago, I went back and reviewed the original 1996 movie From Dusk Till Dawn starring George Clooney, Harvey Keitel and Juliette Lewis. I did so to lay the groundwork for the TV series that you recommended. Yessum, I plan to begin watching it very soon and thanks for letting me know that Demi is in season three!

Thank you again for your visit and sweet comments, dear friend Cathy. I wish you and DH a safe and happy weekend!

  10. All these artists are new to me but some of them are quite astonishing. It seems like the Internet has brought so much into our lives that we might never have known about before. It takes my breath away.

    1. Hi, Kathleen!

How are you today? Thank you for coming by, dear friend!

I'm delighted to know that you are getting your first exposure to all of these female artists here on SDMM. I hope they astonished you in a good way.

Yessum, had it not been for internet based YouTube, Wiki, Amazon and All Music Guide, I would never have discovered these acts and others in this series, because those are the sources upon which I rely most heavily when I do my research.

Thank you again for swinging over for a visit, Kathleen, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  11. Thanx 4 introducing me 2 sum of the crème de la crème female performers, Mr Shady ... me not watch TV at all and decided 2 keep dat way ... struggling enough with da past so why should I elect to struggle with da future, hmmm? Anyway ... love what U do, Mr Shady McDell ... smiles ... Always, cat.

    1. Hi, cat!

      Shady McDell here! :)

I know that you post YouTube videos on your own blog, dear friend, so let me remind you that you can watch all of these videos on YouTube and don't have to turn on the BoobTube. :)

I'm sorry you had an unpleasant past. You are not alone. I hope your visits to SDMM put a smile on your face. They put a smile on mine! :)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, dear friend cat!

  12. Hi Shady!
I enjoyed this presentation before I left for an impromptu hiatus, but can only now comment. Nice line-up! I liked the two I hadn't heard before the best; Cher Lloyd and Fifth Harmony. Cher has a real fine singing voice and (forgive me for eavesdropping) Fifth Harmony on X Factor is an added plus!
Roger is taunting the girls again and I must intervene. Back when I can. Thanks for the great entertainment, my friend :-)

    1. Hi, Diedre!

Did you flee the blazing hot desert to seek refuge in the shady mountains again? :)

Thank you very much for dropping in on your weekend, dear friend!

Naturally, I like everything I post here and it always pleases me when your ears match mine on an artist or two. I'm delighted to know you enjoyed the brash and sassy Miami girl group Fifth Harmony and the equally feisty Cher Lloyd, an English songstress with an abundance of soul and street cred. I have more of Cher's songs and vids in the pipeline so stay tuned!

Thank you again for your visit and kind comments, dear friend Diedre. I wish you a wonderful week ahead!

    2. Right you are, my thoughtful friend! See, I lost sight of a spider in the house a few days ago and moved out ;-) Kidding, we have spiders here too. Hubs had fishing fever and we hadn't been to the mountains since last month. Nice respite, just too many projects going on in the desert to relax. Thanks again for an enjoyable post, I look forward to more on Cher Lloyd ;-)

    3. Thanks, dear Deidre!

I can tell how much you enjoy your mountain retreat especially at this time of year.

As always I appreciate your visit and cheery comments!

  13. Those girls look so different and more natural when they were little and now they grew up to be glamorous femmes but not fatales. Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez are quite talented and have wonderful voices and seem to have their act together. Some like that last girl group are also pretty good even if they are not my cup of tea.

    1. Hi, Birgit!

How are you tonight, dear friend? Thank you for coming by!

Yessum, Demi and Selena looked quite different back in 2002-2004, the years they were members of the Barney cast. In the 10+ years since, they have blossomed into glamorous women, both of them accomplished singers and actresses, with millions of fans around the world.

I just noticed a news item this evening reporting alleged friction between two members of Fifth Harmony and a fan backlash against one of them. Stories like that are common throughout music history, reminding us how hard it is to keep some acts together, even highly successful ones.

I'm happy to know you recognize the talent on display in this post, dear friend BB. Thanks again for coming and have a wonderful week!

  14. Great choices, Shady, even though I didn't know the British girl. I hope you had a good weekend!

    1. Hi, Ashton!

Thank you for swinging over for a visit this evening, my friend!

I'm glad you like my pop playist for volume 6 of the series. It was my pleasure to introduce not one but two British girls in this post - Jessie J and Cher Lloyd. Perhaps you liked them both. Yes? No?

Have a great week, dear friend Ashton!

  15. Hi, Shady! Better late than never, I hope. Believe it or not, I'm familiar with these artists to some extent. Demi and Fifth Harmony I remember from the X-Factor. I loved the way Demi sassed back at Simon when she was a judge on that show. IMO, she has a powerful voice, especially when she drops the "girly" affectations. like HERE. Selena sure has grown up since her days as Bieber's girlfriend! Talented singers, all. Thanks for the presentation.

    1. Hi, Debbie the Doglady!

How was your weekend, dear friend? Thanks for coming down! I'm excited to know that you are familiar with all of these artists. Unlike some of the newcomers in this series, these are all established acts - seasoned veterans if you will.

I agree that Demi Lovato has a robust voice and can belt out a song with the best of them. I already own her Confident CD and therefore I am familiar with "Stone Cold." The lady is versatile, that's for sure. If you have time, listen to the country duet that my friend Holli recommended. It impressed the hell out of me and I think you'll like it, too!

You might not have found many non-girly voices in this set (par for the course here at SDMM :), but I thank you for listening and for acknowledging the talent represented here.

Have a terrific week, dear friend Debbie, and hustle back here this Friday when I will mark the 50th anniversary of a specific event in my life!

  16. That country song wasn't bad and I can appreciate the lyrics. ☺ We had a quiet weekend, winding down from our vacation. Had a couple of dogs running around, hanging out on the back deck, etc. Hope you enjoyed your weekend as well, Shady. I try to read all of your posts. Cheers!

    1. Hi, Debbie!

We had two violent electrical storms today plus torrential rains - pretty wild weather.

I'm happy to learn that you guys enjoyed a quiet weekend with your dogs. I wish I had a dog! :(

Thanks for the return visit, dear friend Debbie, and have a wonderful week ahead!

  17. Ok now we're talkin , Shady! I've always liked staying up with the times with music. I know all these songs and artist Jesse J being my favorite and Cher Lloyd being my least. The first time I heard Cher was w/ her first hit, " I want you back". ( I thought it was silly)!

I have to say, all these women portray themselves as sex up objects and much older then they truly are!! I'm sure it helps to sell the records!

Fun post and right up my alley! Way to go, Shady!

    Toni Deroche

    1. Hi, Toni!

Thanks for popping in and bringing your dancing shoes, dear friend! We have another winner! You are the third follower to tell me you are familiar with all of these artists.

Can't go wrong with Jessie J. She's one exciting performer, but I also love Cher Lloyd and actually have "I Want You Back" in the pipeline for a future post. You'll just have to skip over it if it annoys you.

As far as the women portraying themselves as older than they are, I think you are probably talking mainly about Fifth Harmony because they are the youngest in this post with two members age 19. When their single "BO$$" was released, the youngest member of Fifth Harmony was just turning age 17. Even so, it is not uncommon these days for girls much younger than that to dress and act older. The other artists in the post are all in their twenties. Jessie J is 28. Selena is 24, Demi turns 24 this month and Cher is 23. With many pop artists starting out at age 11 or 12, mid 20s seems almost ancient.

I'm delighted that your ears matched mine on this batch of songs/videos, dear friend Toni. Take good care of yourself and please come by this Friday when I present a special 50 year flashback post!

  18. I loved seeing the young and "all-grown-up" images. How quickly that happens. I'm a Selena fan, but I have room for more of these talents. Thanks for putting this post together for us.

    1. Hi, C Lee!

How are you today, my new friend? I'm very happy to see you!

Yessum, these jarring juxtapositions show Demi and Selena then and now. A few years made a big difference. I'm happy to know you are already a fan of Selena and it was my pleasure to introduce you to new faces, voices, songs and videos in this volume of my year long pop series.

Thank you again for your visit and kind comment, dear friend C. Lee, and enjoy the rest of your week!

  19. I had no idea Selena and Demi were part of the Barney show. My kids were never into that one, otherwise I probably would have seen them.

They're both very talented young women. Honestly though, I wish all these artist would stop using sexual content in their videos. It becomes the thing that is the main focus. Additionally, these artists are roll models for a lot of kids. What kind of self-esteem issues will young girls have if they feel they have to live up to these body images to be successful and wanted?

Okay. That's my commentary. Have a terrific week , Shady!

    1. Hi, Sherry!

Thank you very much for coming over and joining the discussion about today's pop divas the pop diva wannabes.

I hear you about the sexuality in most of these videos, and I think you'll agree that this has been going on for quite some time. I'm no music expert, but I trace this phenomenon back to the late 1990s when Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera exploded in popularity and established a new standard for female teen pop artists with their sexy songs and videos including Britney's "...Baby One More Time," "(You Drive Me) Crazy" and "Oops!...I Did It Again," and Christina with "Genie in a Bottle" and "Come On Over (All I Want Is You)." The genie is indeed out of the bottle, Pandora's Box thrown wide open, and who knows what girl pop will look and sound like in the decades to come?

Thank you again for your visit and comment, dear friend Sherry!

You talkin' to me?
