WWF (Wow What Fun) Grudge Match - Round One: "Your Airplane Spin Keeps Lifting Me... Higher and Higher!"

Welcome to

WWF (Wow What Fun)

Grudge Match!

WWF Grudge Match is inspired by the
pro wrestling exhibitions I watched on TV
as a boy. In this series I will present modern
recordings that either cover or sample old hits.
There are two pairs of recordings in each post.
Think of each pair as a wrestling tag team.
They do not compete against each other.
They compete together against the
opposing tag team (song team).

LET THE

WWF Grudge Match

BEGIN!

GREEN TAG TEAM

 "Higher and Higher"

 JACKIE WILSON

Jackie Wilson, "The Titan of Soul,"
scored a top 10 Pop/#1 R&B hit
in 1967 with "(Your Love Keeps
Lifting Me) Higher and Higher."

"(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me)
Higher and Higher" Jackie Wilson
Sept. 1967, highest chart position
#6 Hot 100/#1 R&B)

 PIXIE LOTT

In 2014 English dance-pop hit maker
Pixie Lott released a cover of "Higher
and Higher" on her first greatest hits
album Platinum Pixie: Hits.

"(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me)
Higher and Higher" Pixie Lott
(from November 2014 album
Platinum Pixie: Hits)

BLUE TAG TEAM

 "Oh How Happy"

 SHADES OF BLUE

In 1966 the Michigan blue-eyed soul
group Shades of Blue brushed the
top 10 with "Oh How Happy."

"Oh How Happy" - Shades of Blue
(June 1966, highest chart pos. #12)

 KIDDA

UK electronic music and video producer
Ste McGregor goes by the name Kidda.
In 2009, Kidda released "Strong 2Gether,"
a single that samples the Shades of
Blue hit "Oh How Happy."

"Strong 2Gether" - Kidda
(2009 single)

Okay, it's time for you to choose.

(Remember: votin' is verboten :)

 Which tag team won the

WWF Grudge Match?...

The GREEN TAG TEAM...

Jackie Wilson and Pixie Lott

singing "Higher and Higher"?

...or The BLUE TAG TEAM,

Shades of Blue and Kidda

performing "Oh How Happy?

Stay tuned for Round 2 of

  WWF Grudge Match

coming soon!

Have a Shady day!

Remembering Helen

HELEN TROSTLE ETTLINE

PASSED AWAY FEBRUARY 25, 1984,

33 YEARS AGO TODAY.
The following song, performed by the late
Natalie Cole and her father, Nat, reminds
me of a very special person, the first lady
of the Shady Dell... Helen Ettline.

Unforgettable, Helen.

That's what you are!

We love you and miss you.

That Was Then - This Is Now, Vol. 2: The Jarring Juxtaposition of Female Vocalists & Groups Past & Present!

You've come a long way, baby...

and these jarring juxtapositions

offer indisputable proof!

Welcome to Vol. 2 of my series

Jarring Juxtapositions:

That Was Then - This Is Now!

It is not my intention to pass judgement,
only to offer a comparison. Hard as it
might be for you to believe, I enjoy
all of the female artists in this
series and regard all of these
performances as great.

Join me on this jarring journey
back and forth through time as
we compare the look, the sound
and the attitude of female
singers then...and now!

THAT WAS THEN

SHELLEY FABARES

It's a different world, my friend. When I was
a boy in the 1950s and early 60s, most girls
looked, sounded and acted like Mary Stone,
teenage daughter on The Donna Reed Show
played by Shelley Fabares. Back then there
was greater emphasis on formality. When
people spoke they used indoor voices and
communicated more respectfully. Proper
manners, etiquette and decorum were
emphasized. Return with me now
and enjoy a classic girl pop song
performed by one of my favorite
yestergirls... Shelley Fabares.

"Johnny Angel" - Shelley Fabares
(Apr./May 1962, highest chart pos. #1
scene from The Donna Reed Show)

THIS IS NOW

LINZEY RAE

By day, Linzey Rae is just your average girl
at home with her cat. By night, she sings
with The Anchor, a five-piece Denver-
based metalcore band. In this surreal
shot-at-home tutorial, Linzey Rae
shows us what's cookin' in her
  Metal Kitchen.

"Metal Kitchen #1: The Ghost Inside makes
Shepherd's Pie with Linzey Rae" (2015)
(Cover of “The Great Unknown,”
a 2012 song by the LA melodic
hardcore band The Ghost Inside.)

THAT WAS THEN

DOLLY PARTON

From the aural assault of Linzey Rae
we travel back in time to experience
the infectious smile, charming
personality and down home
goodness of Dolly Parton.

Dolly's 1967 debut album Hello, I'm Dolly
yielded two hit singles and brought the
up-and-coming country artist to the
attention of Porter Wagoner who
introduced Dolly on his television
series The Porter Wagoner Show.
Here's Dolly singing "Dumb Blonde, "
the first hit single from the album.

"Dumb Blonde" - Dolly Parton
(Nov. 1966 single from Feb. 1967 album
Hello, I'm Dolly, live appearance on
The Porter Wagoner Show)

THIS IS NOW

LENE ALEXANDRA

Here's a young lady who takes "dumb blonde"
to the next level. Submitted for your approval
(or disapproval as the case may be) Norwegian
zinger and television personality Lene Alexandra.
In 2007 the former stripper and lad's mags model
scored a top 3 hit in Norway (#5 in Finland)
with her debut single, the outrageous
bubblegum dance-pop ditty
"My Boobs Are OK."

"My Boobs Are OK" - Lene Alexandra
(Mar. 2007, highest chart pos. #3 Norway,
#5 Finland, from Feb. 2008 album
Welcome to Sillycone Valley)

THAT WAS THEN

KAREN CARPENTER

THE CARPENTERS

I think I'm gonna be sad. I tend to
get that way when I think about the
pop duo The Carpenters and how
Karen left us far too soon. In 1970
a cover of the Beatles' hit "Ticket
To Ride" became The Carpenters'
first single to reach the chart.
Listen now to one of Karen's
greatest and most beautiful
vocal performances.

"Ticket To Ride" - The Carpenters
(Apr./May 1970, highest chart pos. #54
from October 1969 album Offering)

THIS IS NOW

THE PRETTY RECKLESS

In shocking contrast to Karen Carpenter,
I bring you one of today's hottest singing
stars. Check out the look, the sound and
the attitude of Taylor Momsen, lead
singer of the hard rock band
The Pretty Reckless.

"Absolution" - The Pretty Reckless
(from Mar. 2014 album Going To Hell)

I think I'm gonna be sad

I think it's today

Be My Valentine, Sugababe!

Hi, I'm Meg Griffin of Family Guy,

filling in this week for Shady.

Valentine's Day is coming

and here I sit... all alone...

dateless... loveless... hopeless.

I wish that I could be like the cool kids
'Cause all the cool kids, they seem to fit in.

Maybe things would be different if I had an extreme make-over!

Pretty woman, walkin' down the street
Pretty woman the kind I like to meet

I'd give anything to look like Mila Kunis
and land a hunky guy like Ashton Kutcher!

Til then I guess I'm stuck with nerdy Neil Goldman.

Oh well, a girl can dream, can't she?
Watch these V-day videos that Shady picked
out for you. I'll be back at the end of the post.

 SUGABABES

I'm sold on Sugababes, the veteran Brit girl trio
that makes R&B go POP! Formed in 1998 with
members Siobhán Donaghy, Mutya Buena and
Keisha Buchanan, Sugababes underwent a few
personnel changes over the years that brought
Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen
into the act. Every Sugababes lineup has given
us gems of the genre. In 2006, with members
Keisha, Heidi and Amelle, Sugababes released
the new song "Easy" as the lead single on
their greatest hits album Overloaded:
The Singles Collection.

"Easy" was a top 10 hit in the UK and reached
the top 5 in Slovakia and top 3 in Belgium.
There was electricity in the air as the soulful
Sugababes performed the song live on VIVA,
a music TV channel in the UK and Ireland.

"Easy" - Sugababes
(Nov. 2006, highest chart pos.
#3 Belgium/#5 Slovakia/#8 UK,
from album Overloaded: The Singles
Collection, live performance on VIVA)

Here's a great performance by the original
lineup of Sugababes - Mutya, Keisha and
Siobhán. Appearing live in 2000 on the
UK music TV show Top of the Tops,
the girls mesmerized the audience
with "Overload," the first single
from their debut studio album
One Touch.

"Overload" - Sugababes
(Sept. 2000, highest chart pos. #2
New Zealand, #3 Germany & Austria,
from Nov. 2000 album One Touch,
live performance on Top of the Pops)

 NICK JONAS

On New Year's Rockin' Eve in the Shady
you were entertained by Joe Jonas, former
member of the pop rock band The Jonas Bros,
and his new, super cool funk pop/dance rock
band DNCE. Now meet one of Joe's brothers,
singer/songwriter and Disney Channel movie
actor Nick Jonas. In the fall of 2014, as a solo
artist, Nick achieved the highest charting and
best selling single of his career with "Jealous"
which cracked the top 10 on the Hot 100 and
hit #1 on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart.

"Jealous" - Nick Jonas
(Club Killers Deep House Remix,
Sept. 2014, highest chart pos. #17
U.S. Pop Songs/#17 U.S. Dance Club,
#38 Hot 100, from Nov. 2014
album Nick Jonas)

 JESSIE AND

 THE TOYS BOYS

Jessica Eden Malakouti is one of the brightest
rising stars of modern dance pop. Using the
stage name Eden xo, the Los Angeles based
singer/songwriter scored a hit with "Too Cool
To Dance," a song and video featured last year
in vol. 1 of my series on post-millennial pop.
As an act called Jessie and the Toy Boys,
Jessica opened for Britney Spears on her
Femme Fatale tour. From Jessica's 2011 EP
Show Me Your Tan Lines, here is one of the
singles that inspired this post - "Valentine."

 SUGABABES

Time to spice things up with another dose
of Sugababes. "Push the Button," one of the
girl group's biggest hits, was named by some
critics as one of the best pop singles of the
2000s. Recorded by the combo of Keisha,
Mutya and Heidi and released in the fall
of 2005 as lead single from the group's
4th studio album Taller in More Ways,
"Press the Button" hit #1 in the UK
and four other countries.

"Push the Button" - Sugababes
(Nov. 2005, highest chart pos.
# 1 UK & four other countries,
from Oct. 2005 album
Taller in More Ways, live
performance Sept. 2005)

 MUTYA KEISHA

 SIOBHAN

One by one Siobhán, Mutya and Keisha
left Sugababes, but the original lineup
reunited in 2012 amid reports they were
back in the studio working on a new album.
In 2013, the trio, renamed Mutya Keisha
Siobhan aka MKS, released the critically
acclaimed single "Flatline." A minor hit
in the UK and a substantial hit in Ireland
and Lebanon, "Flatline" proved that the
founders were still capable of producing
that otherworldly, almost indefinable,
Sugababes sound!

"Flatline"
Mutya Keisha Siobhan
(Sept. 2013, highest chart pos.
#14 Ireland/#19 Lebanon/#50 UK)

She's Out Of This World.....

ZSA ZSA GABOR!

 TRIVIA QUESTIONS:

Zsa Zsa Gabor starred in one of my favorite
movies of the 1950s. The poster is displayed
above. What is the English title of that film?
What is special about this date?

(SCROLL DOWN)

 ANSWERS TO

 TRIVIA QUESTIONS:

Zsa Zsa Gabor starred in the 1958 sci-fi
adventure movie Queen of Outer Space.
I was 8 years old when my big brother
took me to see the fantasy flick which
was set in the distant future - 1985! :)
Queen of Outer Space was one of those
movies that was so bad... it was great!

Queen of Outer Space hit theaters
September 7, 1958. That same week,
Rockabilly Hall of Famer Robin Luke's
biggest hit "Susie Darlin'" was climbing
the chart on its way to a top 5 finish.

"Susie Darlin' - Robin Luke
(Sept./Oct. '58, highest chart pos. #5)

This is a special date because
Zsa Zsa Gabor would have turned
100 years old today. I had this post
written a year ago, saving it for
today, hoping that Zsa Zsa would
make it to 100, but it wasn't
meant to be. She died back
in December at age 99.

Although Zsa Zsa didn't quite make it to
the century mark, I still wanted to run
this birthday salute and recall that
goofy sci-fi movie of hers.

REMEMBERING

ZSA ZSA GABOR

ON WHAT WOULD

HAVE BEEN HER

100TH BIRTHDAY!

Have a Shady day!
