What's Cookin' at the Shady Dell? Another Tantalizing Pizza the Puzzle!

WHAT A FIND!

My dear friend Toni Deroche, former owner
of the Shady Dell, acquired pictures of
these handsome Dell signs from a
collector named Chris Werner.

Courtesy of Chris Werner

In an effort to determine the age of the menu sign,
I compared the prices on it to the ones on the
hand held menu (below) which was donated
by John Ettline's niece Nancy Rae Sieling.

Three items appear on both the sign
and on the above portion of the menu -
Chicken in a Basket and Shrimp in
a Basket
are listed in the upper left,
and Banana Split in the lower right.
All prices are the same except for
Shrimp in a Basket which is $1.00
on the sign and 90 cents on the menu.
These clues seem to indicate that the
collectibles are roughly the same age,
the hand held menu being slightly older.

We had already determined that the Sieling menu
was printed in the 1950s because the Dell's phone
number that appears on it has only five digits -
51007. How cool that the Dell's phone number
ended in Double O Seven! Like Bond, I always
ordered my cherry cokes "shaken, not stirred."
It seems likely that the hand held menu was
printed in the late 50s and Werner's menu
sign was made in the late 50s to early 60s.

Thank you Chris Werner...

and thank you Toni Deroche

for contributing to our

growing collection of

Shady Dell memorabilia!

Urban Decay: Hot Fun in the Summer... in the City... with Pop Rapper Becky G!

Welcome to part 5 of my

my 12-part series on the

up-and-coming young artists

of pop, pop rock and pop rap!

becky g

At the age of nine Rebecca Gomez went through a
mid-life crisis. She sought a direction for her life
and found it in music. Influenced by hip hop, pop,
country and Spanish recordings, Rebecca chose
to pursue a career as a singer, songwriter and
rapper. She took the stage name Becky G
and in 2011 started to grow a following
on YouTube with videos of herself
performing popular songs. An EP
album release and a string of
singles followed, including
four Billboard chart hits.

In 2014 Becky G won the Radio Disney
Music Award for Best New Artist and in
2015 was nominated for Artist of the Year
in the Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Becky is also an actress with TV credits
that include the Fox musical drama Empire
and the role of Trini/Yellow Ranger in
next year's reboot film of the series
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

As a rap artist, Becky G is the real deal -
a force to be reckoned with. Still in her
teens, Becky G brings it with confidence,
essential for anyone who wants to be a
convincing rapper. Becky G doesn't beat
around the bush. She gets to the point,
dishing a slick, sophisticated, street-
wise blend of pop-rap and Latin pop.
Watch and listen as Becky takes it
to the hoop with a reverse slam dunk
on her top 40 single "Break a Sweat."

"Break a Sweat"
(August 2015, highest chart pos.
#36 Mainstream Top 40)

In the summer of 2013, Becky G released the
EP album Play It Again. In the video for the
title track, Becky G shows off her vocal and
dance talents along with an abundance
of inner city rap street cred.

"Play It Again" - Becky G
(single from July 2013 EP
album Play It Again)

I introduced "Mr Worldwide," Miami rapper
Pitbull, in my post on the 4th of JulyIn 2013,
Pitbull hooked up with rap prodigy Becky G
on the single "Can't Get Enough."

"Can't Get Enough" - Becky G ft. Pitbull
(from July 2013 EP Play It Again)

In the summer of 2014, Becky G scored
her first U.S. hit single with the top 20
charting "Shower." Time Magazine
called this sizzler a "sugar rush."

"Shower" - Becky G
(June 2014, highest chart pos.
#16 Hot 100/#1 US Heatseekers)

We be havin' hot fun in the summertime with
Becky G.  Here's another charted single
and vid by Becky that's muy caliente.
Girls just wanna have fuh-un and
Becky G "Can't Stop Dancin'."

"Can't Stop Dancin'" - Becky G
(January 2015, highest chart position
#88 Hot 100/#20 US Hot Rap Songs
#10 US Monitor Latino)

In the fall of 2013, Becky G released the following
mind blowing, psychedelicized video in which she
asks the musical question, "R U built for this?"
I want my MTV...with lots and lotsa Becky G!

"Built For This" - Becky G
(Nov. 2013 video release)

I hope you enjoyed the music and dancing
of Becky G. Stick around for more exciting
Generation Y and Z poppers, rappers
and rockers coming soon in part 6!

It's My 8 Year Blog Anniversary... and My 1st Wordless (almost) Wednesday: "What Play Looked Like in 1952"

That's right...

Shady Dell Music & Memories

is 8 years old today!

To celebrate the occasion

I present my very first

Wordless (almost) Wednesday.

I thought you might enjoy this picture taken
in the summer of 1952. It reminds us how
kids played back then. Play was low tech
(very often no tech) and relied heavily
on the imagination. As I recall we had
no problem finding ways to have fun.
On the far left is "Jasper the Giraffe,"
a bright orange and yellow wooden
table/clothes tree built by my dad.

What play looked like in 1952
(L to R) two of our cousins, my big brother & Shady Del Knight - age 2

Dear friend, I want to thank you for supporting Shady Dell Music & Memories. Whether you have been following me for years, months, weeks or days, you are very important to me and I value your friendship. Stick around for lots more fun and great music and memories coming up in year nine.

That Was Then - This Is Now, Vol. 1: The Jarring Juxtaposition of Female Vocalists & Groups Past & Present!

You've come a long way, baby...

and these jarring juxtapositions

offer indisputable proof!

Welcome to Vol. 1 of my new series

Jarring Juxtapositions:

That Was Then - This Is Now!

It is not my intention to pass judgement,
only to offer a comparison. Hard as it
might be for you to believe, I enjoy
all of the female artists in this
series and regard all of these
performances as great.

Join me on this jarring journey
back and forth through time as
we compare the look, the sound
and the attitude of female
singers then...and now!

THAT WAS THEN

THE LENNON SISTERS

I said it before and I'll say it again.
It's a different world, my friend.
When I was a boy in the 1950s
girls looked, sounded and acted
like The Lennon Sisters, breakout
stars of The Lawrence Welk Show.

"Getting To Know You" - The Lennon Sisters
(1957 episode of The Lawrence Welk Show)

THIS IS NOW

BUTCHER BABIES

In stark, staggering contrast I bring you
up to the present with Butcher Babies,
tied with In This Moment as my favorite
female-led metal band. Heidi Shepherd
and Carla Harvey, lead singers of the
L.A. metalcore act, are everything
modern metal maidens should be -
young and restless... bold and
beautiful... brash and sassy
and right in your face!

"Igniter" - Butcher Babies
(from August 2015 album
Take It Like a Man)

THAT WAS THEN

LITTLE PEGGY MARCH

Just when you thought those evil Butcher Babies
were gonna gitcha, back we go to the safety and
innocence of the pre-Beatles 60s. 13 year old
Margaret Battavio from the S.E. Pennsylvania
borough of Lansdale, was discovered by the
RCA Victor producing team of Hugo & Luigi.
The Brill Building waxmen changed Margaret's
name to Little Peggy March because she stood
less than 5 feet tall, the first song she recorded
for them was "Little Me" and her birthday was
in March. In 1963, when Peggy March was
only 15, she became the youngest female
artist to score a #1 hit on the Hot 100,
a record that still stands. Here's Peggy
on Perry Como's Kraft Music Hall
singing "I Will Follow Him."

"I Will Follow Him" - Little Peggy March
(May 1963, highest chart position #1)

THIS IS NOW

INFECTED RAIN

You'll be driven stark raving mad by the
jarring juxtapopsition of pop princess
Peggy March, pure as the driven snow...

... and Lena Cataraga, the frenzied lead singer
of Infected Rain, a Nu Metal band from the
Eastern European country of Moldova.
On the band's website they ask visitors
and budding fans "Are you infected yet?"
In 2016 Infected Rain serendipitously
released (or unleashed) "Serendipity."
Are you ready to get infected?

"Serendipity" - Infected Rain
(February 2016 single)

THAT WAS THEN

JANIS IAN

At the age of 14, Grammy Award winning
folksinger and songwriter Janis Ian wrote
"Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking),"
a song dealing with the then taboo topic
of interracial teenage romance. Due to
its controversial subject matter, the
record was banned by some radio
stations across the country but
reached #1 in a few markets.
In 2001, "Society's Child" was
inducted into the Grammy Hall
of Fame. Return with me now to
1967 when the times they were a
changing and witness pop music
history being made as 16 year old
Janis Ian sings "Society's Child" on
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.

"Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)"
Janis Ian (June 1967, highest chart pos. #14,
live on the November 26, 1967 episode of
The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.)

THIS IS NOW

AVRIL LAVIGNE

On her 2013 pop punk single "Rock N Roll,"
Canadian singer/songwriter Avril Lavigne
doesn't mince words. Avril and her gal pal,
Winnie Cooper from The Wonder Years, are
all about self-empowerment and rebellion.

"Rock N Roll" - Avril Lavigne
(Aug. 2013, h.c.p. #1 S. Korea
#5 Japan/#37 Canada/#91 Hot 100
from Nov. 2013 album Avril Lavigne)

One of these days I'm gonna stop my listenin'
Gonna raise my head up high
One of these days I'm gonna raise my glistenin'
Wings and fly

But that day will have to wait for awhile
Baby, I'm only society's child
When we're older things may change
But for now this is the way they must remain

Riley's Rave Vol. 1: The Boys and Girls of Sense8 Are Goin' Wild for the Night!

            THIS POST IS RATED
       TV-IA
    (FOR IMMATURE ADULTS ONLY!)
IT MAY CONTAIN EXPLICIT LANGUAGE AND
 SEXUAL REFERENCES. IF THE CALENDAR
SAYS YOU'RE OLD, BUT YOU SAY YOU'RE
YOUNG AND NOT READY TO ROLL OVER
AND PLAY DEAD, THEN SAY THE PASSWORD,
COME INSIDE AND PARTY LIKE IT'S 1999.
I PROMISE THAT YOU CAN GO BACK TO
BEING OLD TOMORROW IF THAT'S WHAT
YOU WANT, BUT GIVE ME TONIGHT...
JUST THIS ONE NIGHT... AND DARE
         TO BE YOUNG, WILD AND
              CAREFREE AGAIN!

HELLO! MY NAME IS RILEY BLUE.

I'm the Icelandic DJ who rocks the clubs of London
on the sci-fi television series Sense8. Welcome to
vol. 1 of Riley's Rave, an underground all-nighter
that only you and a few other close friends know
about. Say the password "CODE BLUE" and
the burly bouncer will wave you through the
door. Once inside you can rock till you drop
as I play the hottest electronic dance beats
from artists around the world.

* CAUTION: Use this post only as directed.
These tracks are meant to be played LOUD,
so be sure to crank it up to 10. No wimping out!
Listen to my playlist late at night when you are
ready to party. If you attempt to listen during the
day you will most likely become intoxicated by
the booming bass lines, cancel that important
business meeting, and wind up getting fired.
I accept no responsibility if that happens!

* Beware: This isn't your grandmother's disco.
This is an adult swim. Some of these songs
and videos contain lyrics and images
that are unsuitable for children.

The clock is striking 12. The old folks
are fast asleep. Sneak out of the house,
beat it over to my rave and experience
globalizationthe international
club sound that is uniting
the youth of the world.

THE NIGHT IS STILL YOUNG
