Season 3 - Ep. 40: Sufferin' Suffrage... Beaver is Denied the Right To Vote!

I'm sorry, but I don't think it's a good idea, Beaver.

But dad, all the other kids are voting in Shady Del Knight's Version Sacrifice. Shady's the coolest guy on the internet!

Beaver, I said no. First of all... this is 1960. There's no such thing as the internet. Secondly,
I don't care what all of your friends are doing.
I supposed if they all jumped in the lake you'd do it, too.

Wul...sure. It's a whole lotta fun to go swimmin'.

That's not the point, Beaver. Voting is a big responsibility and you're too young and inexperienced to handle that much responsibility. I said no and that's my final answer. Now I'm finished discussing the matter.

Mmmm...Yes, sir.

I'm sorry you didn't get to vote in my VerSac, Beav. Someday, when you're old enough to exercise your right to vote, you can take it to the park and let it chase rabbits join the SDMM gang and voice your choice.

HERE'S HOW I VOTED.

This week's VerSac featured three veteran R&B
artists - Jimmy Jones, Little Eva and LaVern Baker.
Jimmy and Eva teamed up in the studio to record
"Don't You Just Know It," a cover of the hit by
Huey "Piano" Smith and the Clowns. LaVern's
original recording of "Bumble Bee" was eclipsed
by the English Merseybeat band The Searchers.
I love LaVern Baker and collected her recorded
works. SDMM has a proud tradition of paying
tribute to black artists and their great, often
little known original recordings. However,
I gave my vote to the duo of Jimmy Jones
and Little Eva, best known for recording
as solo artists. The studio collaboration
of Jimmy and Eva on "Don't You Just
Know It," made possible by the F-G-G
production team, was inspired. I love
the driving beat which, I think you'll
agree, borrows heavily from the 1965
hit "Wooly Bully" by Sam the Sham and
the Pharaohs. The beat also reminds me of
"Night Time," a single released a few months
earlier by F-G-G under the name The Strangeloves.
I appreciate the F-G-G production style and the fact
that they gave both of these R&B vets another shot
at success, even if it didn't work out that well.

LET'S CHECK THE RESULTS AND FIND OUT
WHICH RECORD WON THIS WEEK'S CONTEST.

JIMMY JONES/LITTLE EVA 12

LAVERN BAKER 5

RAY STEVENS 1
(WRITE-IN VOTE FOR "GITARZAN")

Congratulations to Jimmy Jones & Little Eva,
winners of this weeks Version Sacrifice.
Thank you for voting!

Ward, don't you think you were
a little rough on the Beaver last night?

It always makes me laugh when you do a Leave It To Beaver bit-- and the punchline at the end was hilarious!

I am happy that Don't You Just Know It claimed the majority of the votes. Your vote doesn't match mine very often-- and it is nice to know you agree with me about this one. I just couldn't handle that bell sound on Bumblebee.

This was fun--- and I look forward to your next Version Sac, Shady!

    1. Hi, Kathryn!

Thanks for reporting in and checking out the final score in my latest VerSac. I'm happy to know that you appreciated the Beaver sketch and that you got the joke there at the end. That zinger has been going around for the last 50 years. :)

Yessum, your ears matched mine this time and that's always a surprise. If the bell sound on "Bumble Bee" irritated you then I doubt you'd like Bonnie Pointer's disco cover of "Heaven Must Have Sent You":

Thank you again for playing along in the contest and for your comment this morning, Kathryn. Have a great week!

  2. I'm up early on this lovely Sabbath and I'm happy to be earlier than usual on my comment! Good choice, fun contest..glad I agreed with you! Oh, how I loved the Beav...when I had my knee surgery I watched that family daily while recouping. I had to practically do a 12 step program to get away. Now I'm addicted to Law and Order. What can I say, there's just not much good on the tube these days! You sure nailed the dialog. Are you sure you're not Eddy making fun of the poor Beaver and not letting him vote? You do have a way with words my friend. Maybe it's just all the Law and Order and I'm in the investigating mode. I'll check with the DA and get back to ya! Have a great week!

    1. Hi, YaYa!

Thank you very much for dropping by on a Sunday morning, dear friend. I appreciate it!

I'm excited to know that the Beaver sketch resonated with you. (I think Eddie is responsible for that write-in vote for "Gitarzan." :) Mrs. Shady and I recently watched the entire Leave It To Beaver Series on Netflix. That's one series I never get tired of watching. It feels good to escape the pressure packed present and return to a time when life was simpler and slower paced.

Mrs. Shady and I also love L&O. It was loaded with great actors including Sam Waterston, Chris Noth, Jerry Orbach and Dennis Farina. We also watch the related series SVU and Criminal Intent. If you are a fan of the latter, then you must see Vincent D'Onofrio in the role of Wilson Fisk in season 1 of Marvel's Daredevil. He is amazing!

Thank you very much for your kind visit and comment, dear friend YaYa. Have a wonderful week ahead!

  4. Wow, I got in on the losing side, eh? No worries. I know I was right, and Beaver woulda proved it. By the time Wally, Eddie, Lump, Gilbert, and the others chimed in, it woulda been Baker by a nose! I petition the board to have a recount and let Scrappy vote too! FeelTheVern!

    1. Hi, Chris!

Thanks for coming over, good buddy! I appreciate it! Yessir, the vote went the other way this time. Most people's ears did not match yours. I also caught you trying to stuff the ballot box with votes from Scrappy and unregistered voters from the Beaver cast. Too little, too late, my friend! :)

Keep in mind that every recording I present here on SDMM is a favorite of mine to begin with. If you think about it that way, you realize that you and I are in agreement about LaVern Baker's "Bumble Bee." I actually prefer her original to the Searchers cover. Perhaps we disagree on that point, but it's all good.

Thanks again for spending a portion of your weekend in the Shady, good buddy Chris. Have a Scrappy week ahead!

Trying this again as my first response is currently floating somewhere in cyberspace ;-) Let me know if it ever shows up- ha!
Yay! I think for once, I voted with the majority :-)
I suppose I'll never know how discussions used to actually be closed when a parent said so, but I remember it well. Wouldn't that be good for kids today? It makes for a nice daydream, anyway.
Have a wonderful week, my friend!

Thank you very much for coming by, sweet friend! I'm sorry the cosmos gobbled up your previous comment. Thank you for returning to post another one.

Yessum, watching those old reruns of family friendly 50s/60s sitcoms like Leave It To Beaver reminds us that kids used to respect authority much more than they do today. Life had a more leisurely pace and, for the most part, we felt safer in our homes and in public places.

Thank you for reminiscing with me today, dear friend Diedre, and have a wonderful week ahead!

  12. Re: June's statement to Ward at the end: You know that was the dirtiest line ever uttered on television back then, right?? :)
GREAT Leave It to Beaver sketch!! That was fun. The pictures with the words made it too. You can just hear Beaver saying those things. Fun!

Glad we connected on our final votes for Jimmy & Little Eva. I really did like that song.

How are you faring with the rains down there?? You didn't have any damage, did you, where you are? I hope not. Those storms are scary...

    1. Hi, Michele!

Thank you very much for coming by to find out which song survived the dreaded Version Sacrifice.

I can't name a specific episode of Beaver in which June spoke those exact words to Ward, but it seems like she said something to that effect many times over the years. I'm glad you enjoyed the Beaver sketch and the punchline. :)

Yessum, your ears matched mine and the majority's in this contest. I'm happy to know that you like the obscure recording by Jimmy and Eva. I can't help wondering if they could have become a successful recording duo like Peaches & Herb or Marvin & Tammi if they had been given new songs to record instead of that moldy oldie from the 50s.

I am on the Central Gulf Coast and we haven't had any bad storms since tropical storm Colin passed by to our north. We lost power for about an hour as a result of Colin but I didn't see any flooding or wind damage. Thanks for asking.

Thank you again for spreading cheer over here, dear friend Michele. Enjoy the rest of your week!

Thank you for swinging by, dear friend! As a child I never missed an episode of Leave It To Beaver (although I don't remember this particular episode from season 3 :).

Make no mistake about it. I love LaVern Baker's husky R&B numbers and have them in my collection. I simply preferred the beat and the combination of male and female vocals on "Don't You Just Know It." As I mentioned to Michele, Jimmy & Eva could have become a successful act produced BY F-G-G with an infusion of fresh material.

Thank you again for joining the fun, dear friend Debbie, and enjoy the rest of your week!

I don't think a family as ideal as the Cleavers really ever existed in America, but I can testify that some came close back then. It makes me sad to realize that there are far fewer families like them today.
