Skye's the Limit and Jessica's Da Bomb! "And This Week's BOTB Winner is..."

Hi... I'm Skye.

You know me as one of the stars of the popular
This is my second turn as Shady's guest host.
Shady has asked me to be a presenter at this
week's Battle of the Bands award ceremony.
What does Agents of S.H.A.D.Y. have to do
with BOTB, you ask? Absolutely nothing!
The real reason why Shady invited me back
is because he likes to look at me. Turns out
I am not the only one haunting Shady's
dreams.  It's a three-way tie between
me and two other Asian beauties...
actress Chloe Bennet, seen below...

...and Chinese pop singer Chloe Wang, seen below.

Before I announce the winner of this week's
Battle of the Bands, I will read a message
written by Shady Del Knight on the
back of a 5th Avenue wrapper.
The message reads:

Thanks, Skye, and thanks for subbing for me today. This week's BOTB match-up pitted two outstanding recordings against each other, Ramona King's "Run Johnny Run" which sounds a little like "When You Walk in the Room," and the Spandells' "The Boy Next Door" which copies the melody of "Foolish Little Girl" by the Shirelles. I had a very tough time deciding which of these smasheroos should get my vote. I got goose bumps listening to the glorious harmony produced by those Dimension Dolls, The Spandells. On the Ramona King record I appreciated the dynamic Spectorian Wall-of-Sound production. I also tend to favor up tempo numbers like Ramona's. Perhaps it all boils down to those famous words supposedly uttered way back when on American Bandstand, "It's got a good beat and you can dance to it." That's why, in the final analysis, I decided to vote for the Ramona King platter.

Okay, let's check the big board!

 (write-in vote)

This was my second BOTB and the second time that
I was surprised by the outcome. Going into this week's
battle, I was worried that "Run Johnny Run" might
run away with a lopsided victory. Instead, it was
Johnny's archrival, "The Boy Next Door,"
who won by a comfortable margin.

After completing two BOTB contests I was curious
to determine which friends continued to vote the
same way I did. Turns out there are five friends
whose votes have matched mine: Mike Spain,
Rita, Dolorah, John Holton and Anne O'Leary.
How long can the six of us keep matching
each other? It will be fun to find out.

Due to family obligations involving a long car trip,
I will not be publishing a BOTB post on June 1.
However, I fully intend to visit your blog,
listen to your band battle and comment
a.s.a.p. after I return.  I will be getting
a late start so please understand if I
can't show up at your site until
June 2 or later.  I'll be back
with another BOTB post
on June 15.  Thanks!

Skye, back to you!

Congratulations to The Spandells and
their recording "The Boy Next Door,"
the winners of this week's
Battle of the Bands!

Thanks for voting and be sure
to return for Shady's next BOTB.
And remember.....

Skye's the limit!

Wait a minute!
Hold on to your horses there, sister!

I don't understand what all the fuss is about.
You might be rich and famous and have
good looks and good hair, but I got
news for you. There's a new girl
in town, fresh off the boat
and she's got something you don't.

And I challenge you to stretch a dollar
as far as I can!

If you haven't been following them,
Shady says you should be. This summer
why not do some serious binge-
watching and catch up?

Both shows get my vote

and deserve yours!

  1. I didn’t know you have a thing for Asian women. Well isn’t that special? Just for that, you can vote again.

Vote for where you want to sleep tonight:

    A. The garage
    B. The tool shed
    C. The cat’s litter box on the porch

    1. But…but…but…baby...

      sweetie pie... honey bun...

      snookums… turtle dove…

      I can explain!

  2. Aw, Shady, how funny. I've been bingeng on a 2011 Chinese production of "The History of Zhen Huan," the house of concubines of the Qing Dynasty. Talk about beauties... and lots of silk!

Okay, so you and a certain five vote the same. I'll be watching this awesome group. maybe I'll learn something - or maybe not. I'm happy that the Spandells won this one!

Have a great visit and time away. Praying for a safe trip for you. See you June 15th.

    Spectacular battle, my friend. (smile)

    1. Hi, Dixie! It's great to see you, dear friend! I have reached my destination and am able to resume blogging for a short while in between side trips and family matters.

Mrs. Shady and I share your curiosity about Chinese history. The subject of ancient concubines is especially fascinating to us.

The outcome of my BOTB might sometimes surprise me, but it's always win-win because I like all of the recordings I enter into the contests. I'm glad your horse won the race.

I have a number of brief trips and family obligations coming up over the Memorial Day weekend and in the next couple of weeks but I intend make myself available for blogging as much as possible during that time. I appreciate your patience.

Thank you very much for your kind comment, dear Dixie. Have a wonderful day and I'll see you again soon!

  3. Safe travels and have a great trip!

    1. Hi, Holli! Thank you very much, dear friend. I am off the road and back on the computer for a brief time before getting dragged away again. I hope you enjoyed my latest Battle of the Bands and I look forward to seeing you again soon. Take care, dear Holli!

  4. I don't know anything about these actresses and shows you're talking about, but I'm not too savvy about television these day. With a thousand or so stations to watch anymore I get confused when I turn on the tube and usually end up on TCM watching some old movie. Well that's fine with me. Don't mind seeing a pretty Asian lady now and then though.

I've been noticing on all the other battles that you and I often differ on our picks. I would have thought we might be a bit closer on tastes considering our generational commonality, but who can ever figure about tastes. I've done a number of posts pondering the question of why people like what they do and still haven't figured it out.

I'm glad to see so many others sharing my taste for the Spandells and it appeared that the reasoning behind their choice was essentially the same as mine.

Have good and safe travels in the weeks ahead. Look forward to your upcoming post on June 15th.

    1. Hi, Lee! Thanks for reporting in, good buddy! Don't feel bad. I have posted parodies of many of my favorite TV shows and have been astonished to find how few of my friends watch them or have even heard of them. :)

It's funny but I have been keeping track of your votes here and on other blogs, too, and have been wondering the same thing - why you and I seem to vote differently so much of the time. All I can tell you is that I tend to like recordings that rock me in some way, have a lot of feeling and passion, fire and pizazz. I have also developed a taste for the Phil Spector sound - a dense production mix that surrounds and to some extent buries the lead vocal. Most of my life I hated the Spectorian style but my tastes have changed and I'm sure they will change again someday.

I'm not disappearing from blogging, Lee, and didn't mean to convey that impression. I will be posting again five days from now on May 26 and again on June 1 although it won't be a BOTB post. My rationale is this. I will be away from home and out of touch for too many hours that day and didn't feel comfortable staging a BOTB if I can't be available to reply to comments or answer questions. So there will be a post that day, just not a BOTB.

Thanks again for coming, Lee. I appreciate your comments and your support. Have a great day!

  5. Taste is music is such a subjective thing and it's hard to guess which song might win. I like smooth harmonies and I like the Spandells. But when pitted against Run Johnny Run, the side of me that likes uptempo music came to the fore.

I don't know either of those programmes. From your words am I to understand these are only available on HULU? I don't own a television so that's why I'm asking.

Have a safe journey there and back again. And I do hope Mrs. Shady forgives you and let's you out the dog house:0)

    1. Good day to you, dear Anne! I was just getting ready to write this reply to you when I suddenly got pulled away from the computer for more than an hour. I apologize for the long delay. I reached my destination this morning and for the next few days will be doing my blogging on a borrowed laptop. My schedule will remain in flux for the next two weeks.

When given the choice between a mellow ballad and an up tempo recording delivered with vim and vigor, I usually favor the latter because it lifts my spirits. I also use up tempo music for my daily exercise sessions. I like both recordings used in this battle and have them in my personal collection. To me the Ramona King production packed more of a punch and that's why I voted for it. Besides, if I wanted to hear the exact melody of "Foolish Little Girl" I would prefer to listen to the original.

To answer your question, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Fresh Off The Boat are both on the ABC network, but now that their seasons have ended, folks who missed some or all episodes can find them on Hulu. Mrs. Shady and I love both series and were overjoyed when we read the news that ABC has renewed them for the fall.

I'm glad you got a giggle out of my fake comment from Mrs. Shady. As you know by now I like to make the comment section as fun and exciting to read as the post itself.

Thank you very much for your visit and sweet comments, dear friend Anne. I hope you are having a super day and that you and I will connect again soon!

  6. Good battle Mr. Shady.

I don't watch Fresh Off The Boat, but I do watch AGENTS OF SHIELD. In fact, I'm behind on everything I've DVR'd this year, so I need to finish that one up and clear it off.

    1. Hi, Robin! Thanks for coming over, my dear. Mrs. Shady and I agree that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. finished strong this season. It's a mystery to us why such a fine series has struggled and has remained on the bubble.

Thank you for attending my award bash, dear friend Robin. I hope your Thursday is going well and I wish you a safe and happy holiday weekend!

  7. Hi Shady,
As you and I know, we never have had the same taste in music. So, it came to no surprise that we didn't match up w/ our picks. Although, I always like to keep an open ear to all music and venues. I always enjoy your humorous multiple personalities . I think you could give "Sybil" a run for her money!
I don't watch those shows but, I do know we both enjoy Modern Family. Are you gonna use Sophia as one of your guest speakers someday????
Enjoy your trip and drive safely!
Looking forward to the next post!
    Toni Deroche

    1. Hi, Toni! Thanks for coming, dear friend! It's true. You and I rarely share the same taste in music (or television shows for that matter). But it's all good. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks. Besides, you DID vote for Billie Davis the same as I did in the previous band battle. Remember?

I'll tell you this. If you get a kick out of Gloria on Modern Family, I think you'd love Jessica on Fresh Off The Boat. She's a force to be reckoned with.

I'm already here at my destination but have several more side trips and the return trip ahead. Thank you very much for the well wishes, dear friend Toni, and thank you again for checking out today's post. God bless!

Yeah, it's hilarious to say the least, and it's amazing how you always find the perfect pictures to insert and go along with the narrative.
i can say that i AM familiar with both of these shows this time (wow wow wow i know right, ring the bells and shout hurrah because this is a first lol!) though haven't strictly kept up with them, it's cool to see familiar faces.
And i agree with another's words in 'taste in music is such a subjective thing. isn't that the truth!!
HOORAY FOR LONG CAR TRIPS (at least i hope this is for a good and fun reason). Wishing you and yours safe travels!!
    -Abigail and Daisy

    1. Hi, dear Abigail! Wow - this IS exciting! As I told Arlee Bird, I have published quite a few of these parodies referencing favorite TV shows and characters and have discovered that very few of my reader friends watch the same shows. It's wonderful to know that you watch both of these series and that you get what I was going for in this parody post. :) A few weeks ago Mrs. Shady's daughter told us about Fresh Off The Boat. We had seen listings for it but hadn't bothered to watch it. We decided to binge-watch the series on Hulu and just completed the first season. We can't wait for season 2 to begin. We agree that FOTB is one of the best new comedies to come along in a while and critics are calling Constance Wu's Jessica one of the major breakout characters of the past TV season.

That same daughter had a baby three days ago, making me a grandfather for the 4th time. We traveled across the state today and will be visiting the new baby over the holiday weekend, so there is indeed a very good and fun reason behind our travels.

I deeply appreciate your visit and comments here today, dear friend Abigail. I hope you'll give Daisy a special hug for me and I'll be seeing you again soon. God bless!

  9. Sadly, I missed your second B.O.T.B. post. However, I love that you watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.! We do, too, although we haven't finished this past season for various reasons (giving birth, DVR went out & lost one of the episodes). Did you watch Agent Carter? If you like AoS, you'll like it, and it got renewed for a second season! Have safe travels, my friend!

    1. Hi, dear Ashton! Thank you very much for coming, my oldest blog friend! (For those of you who might not know, Ashton and I have been following each others blogs since 1977.)

I am thrilled to know that you are a fan of S.H.I.E.L.D. Please be sure to watch the remaining episodes of the season because the show keeps getting better, more interesting and more exciting and the finale was terrific. I only wish S.H.I.E.L.D. had more viewers because it always seems to be on the chopping block. I am aware of Agent Carter and Mrs. Shady and I have discussed watching it. Thanks for reminding me about it.

Thank you again for being here for me today, dear friend Ashton. I very much appreciate your support. Take good care of your little cutie pie!

  10. I hope you have a great trip. A grandchild must be a joy. I'm losing hope that I'll have one. Now, how come there's a write-in vote for Cheech & Chong, but I couldn't write in a vote for Jackie DeShannon? Something is rotten in Florida, methinks.

    1. Hi, Janie! Thanks for coming over, dear friend! Yessum, it was a very special moment three days ago when family gathered around that baby minutes after it was delivered. Such a miracle! The pediatric nurses were extremely sweet and professional, put us all at ease and shared our joy. This is the first time in 11 years that I have become a grandfather and the 4th time overall. Please don't give up hope that you will have a grandchild someday.

As blog author I reserve the right to create the rules of the game and to include or exclude write-in votes. I DID include your legitimate vote for Ramona King but it did not affect the outcome.

Thank you again for your support, Janie!

  11. I think maybe you should copy my yearly Time Machine Beauty contest! I just cycle up all the beauties I've put on TM through the year, pick out so many finalists, and let Scrappy pick the winner! Linda Ronstadt took it this year, Tina Louise last year.

    1. Hi, Chris! Scrappy might prefer Ginger, but I'm a Mary Ann man myself. :) I'll be sure to tune in when you present your annual Time Machine Beauty contest. Sounds like fun. If you're taking requests, I urge you to give Granny Clampett a shot at the glory! :)

Hey, thanks for coming, good buddy Chris. Check out my next post five days from now on the 26th and have a safe and happy Memorial weekend!

  12. So nice to see Mrs. Shady make an appearance. LOL! :) I hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable and safe trip. :)

    1. Hi, Linda! I'm very happy to see you, my dear Canadian friend! I have already completed the first leg of my journey and will need to use a borrowed laptop for my blogging for the next few days.

I'm glad you got a chuckle out of the post and Mrs. Shady's comment. I already put fresh cat litter in the box on the back porch and I'm hoping it affords me a good night's sleep. :)

Thank you again for your visit and cheery comment, dear friend Linda. I'll see you tomorrow!

  13. I am glad The Boy Next Door won:) I enjoyed that song. I have not watch Agents of Shield since its first year and I have no knowledge of the other. I am so out of it with regular TV shows. Oh what a shame about missing BOTB since I enjoy finding out which song you will pick but totally understandable. I wish you safe travels and have a wonderful time

    1. Thank you, dear Birgit! I am delighted to see you this evening and glad the outcome of this contest pleased you. I'm also happy to know that you recognize Skye from season 1 of S.H.I.E.L.D. As I have told others I think the series became much more interesting and exciting in the late going of season 2 including the season finale.

Don't be led astray by that program note. Although I have a lot of traveling to do in the next couple of weeks I will continue to publish posts. My next one is next Tuesday, May 26, and I also have a post coming on June 1, although not a BOTB this time around, since I will be away most of that day. I'm going to be visiting my new baby grandson and attending my granddaughter's high school graduation. I also intend to keep up with your latest posts during the busy weeks ahead, although I might need to arrive late sometimes due to family obligations and travel.

Thank you again for your visit and kind comments, dear friend BB. I look forward to connecting with you again soon!

  14. Replies
    1. You're welcome, Widia, and thank you! It was nice of you to stop by and I hope you will visit again soon.

  15. I watch Fresh Off The Boat but not Agents. My issue with ABC is that they don't show their programs for free after they are broadcast. I sometimes have antenna issues -- yes, I am very old school. If my recordings aren't good on other channels I can watch them online a couple days later...but not ABC. I hate to get started on a show where I might miss episodes so I stick mostly to a few half hour comedies where it's not so important to catch every one (FOTB, Goldbergs, Modern Family, The Middle). I do watch Castle and Forever, though, and haven't missed too many of those. My recording system is old and failing (computer Dagan set up) and when it finally goes and I have to watch everything on my laptop...ABC will be dead to me. :(

    1. Hi, dear Rita! Thank you for swinging over for a visit, my friend. I'm glad you recognized that spark plug Jessica from Fresh Off The Boat. It's my favorite new comedy and it's winning praise from the critics.

I hear what you're saying about ABC and I'm sorry there might come a time when you will no longer be able to see ABC shows. Mrs. Shady and I also watch Modern Family and The Goldbergs regularly and The Middle occasionally. I am especially happy to see that The Goldbergs series is doing well in the ratings and was renewed for another season without hesitation.

Did you notice that your ears have matched mine in both of these Battle of the Bands contests? :)

Please smooch Kitty Kat Karma for me and have a safe and happy weekend, dear friend Rita!

    2. Yes, I read that I am one of your readers with similar ears. Right now they are a bit plugged along with my head, my throat burns, and I am coughing. I think I finally may have caught what McFamily has. :(

    3. Oh NO! I hope you and little Ian and all the rest of your family stay well or get well and have a safe and happy holiday weekend. Take care, dear friend Rita!

  16. I learn something new each the fact that you have a cat with a litter box that you can sleep in! Hehehe! (Way to go Mrs. Shady!) Enjoy your trip!

    1. Hi, dear YaYa! Thanks for coming over to see the result of the vote in this week's band battle. I'm glad you left here with a smile on your face. :)

I hope your holiday weekend is off to a great start and that the weather is cooperating up there. I'll be back with another post on Tuesday. See you then, dear friend YaYa!

  17. Hi Shady; Love your fun posts! Mrs. Shady is a feisty one, eh? ☺ I've never seen Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, It's an Avengers spin-off, isn't it? Might check it out one of these days. Not familiar with the other one at all.
As for the contest, I'm not surprised The Shandells won. Looks like our taste in music differs somewhat, but that's what makes life interesting, yes? Enjoy your time away.

    1. Hi, Debbie! Thanks for coming to the award banquet, Doglady! You're right. Mrs. Shady isn't afraid to put me in my place when she's miffed. :)

Yessum, S.H.I.E.L.D. grew out of the Avengers story lines and boasts wall-to-wall action, adventure and eye-popping special effects. Fresh Off The Boat is a terrific new family sitcom with a great cast led by Constance Wu as wife/mother Jessica.

I wouldn't say that you and I have differing taste in music. 99% of the time I post only recordings that I love and I love both entries in this week's contest. I had to vote for one or the other and so I picked the Ramona King record. I'm glad you enjoyed the Spandells.

Thank you very much for participating in my BOTB, dear Debbie. I hope to see you again soon. Have a safe and happy weekend!

  18. Have to check out this Marve's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Can't believe I haven't heard of it before. And The Boy Next Door as well.

Thanks for sharing this again. And hello, Skye! Wonderful name.

    1. Hi, Lux!

Thank you very much for popping in, dear friend! I'm not sure what country you live in, but S.H.I.E.L.D. might not be available there. I have discovered that relatively few of my American friends watch S.H.I.E.L.D. even though it is a big budget adventure series with a great cast and spectacular special effects. Fresh Off The Boat is a laugh out loud comedy series on the same network, ABC. Mrs. Shady and I were thrilled when the network announced that both shows made the cut and will be back in the fall. You can watch both series from the beginning on Hulu.

Thank you very much for coming, dear friend Lux. I hope to connect with you again soon!

  19. Good battle Shady. I was glad the Spandelles won. Hope you have a wonderful and fun trip ahead. Be safe out there.
    Michele at Angels Bark

    1. Hi, dear Michele! I am very happy to see you, my new friend! I'm glad you are pleased with the outcome of the band battle and thank you for the well wishes regarding my trip. I will be back home on Tuesday but coming and going much of the time through June 1, so please bear with me as I try my best to keep fresh posts published and to visit your blog.

In that regard I need you to know that I am having problems leaving a comment on your blog. I have tried five times without success. Each time I checked to make sure that I filled in the form correctly with my email address, name and website info. Each time when I clicked to submit my comment it disappears and does not get published. I sent you an email explaining the difficulty I'm having and offering to send you my comments via email so that you can publish them for me if that's the only solution. The last thing I want to do is convey the impression that your blog is not important to me. It is! Along with my passion for music I am a dog and animal lover. Please let me know what if anything I can do to support your blog.. I am eager to vote in your band battles and I look forward to building a great friendship with you.

Thank you again for your visit and kind comment, dear Michele, and enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend!

  20. I missed ya and I'm BAAAACCCKKK!

    1. I am very happy to know it, dear friend. Thanks for letting me know. Please email me when you get a chance.

      God bless!

You talkin' to me?
