Peanut Scramble: Celebrating My 6 Year Blog Anniversary With a Sunday Snap!

Shady Dell Music & Memories

is 6 years old today!

To celebrate I am carrying on

the tradition of my dear friend

Thisisme at Southhamsdarling

and posting a Sunday Snap.

I realize I am violating the Sunday Snaps rules
by including text, but I wanted to explain what
you are seeing in the picture below. Taken in
the summer of 1952, it shows two year old
Shady Del Knight (standing right rear) and five
of my cousins participating in a peanut scramble.

Similar to an Easter egg hunt, a peanut scramble was a game
for children.  Peanuts were scattered on the ground across a
small area and kids scrambled to gather them.  I suppose the
winner, the kid who collected the most goober peas, won a
prize, probably more of the same. I remember taking part
in peanut scrambles at my church's Sunday school picnics
held in the summertime at White Oaks Park ("The Oaks").
This picture, however, was taken at a family reunion.

Did you ever participate in a peanut scramble?

Dear friend, I want to thank you for supporting Shady Dell Music & Memories. Whether you have been following me for years, months, weeks or days, you
are very important to me and
I value your friendship. Stick around for more fun and more great music and memories coming up in year seven!

  1. Hi Shady Del Knight,

You look so cute, a typical family get-together. Timeless fun, transcending all generations, don't you think, scrambles and egg hunts. Enjoy your holiday, Shady. Yours at writing the rapids - Allie-Millie

  2. I had no idea what peanut scramble was until now, but everyone up there seems to be enjoying it (except the boy on the left.) Congratulations on reaching 6 years of running this blog. I hope you enjoy your break.

Today's post made my heart skip a beat or two, Tom. Let me explain...

There were peanut scrambles in my past too, and I have nightmares about them to this day! My father's company sponsored an employee picnic every summer at William's Grove Park, and I was always pushed (literally) into a pile of squealing, scratching and clawing children with the expectation that I would emerge not only unscathed, but somehow carrying an armload of peanuts.

My father was a seriously competitive man who produced three very UN-competitive offspring. As the youngest and most sensitive of his children, and the only one of us who was eligible for the scramble, I was terrified of this game. Much to my dad's consternation, I begged and pleaded not to have to participate. However, he was an administrator in his company and I'm sure felt my non-participation somehow reflected badly on him. Every year, he tried to convince me that it would be SO much fun, but I knew better.

After the fray was thankfully over, I looked a lot like you in your photo - standing on the sidelines with perhaps ONE peanut in my trembling hand. To this day, I cannot pick up a peanut without remembering my annual summer ordeal, and I'm terrified yet of even purse-wielding bargain-hunter-ladies at Blue Light Specials. Oh, the trauma inflicted upon us as children!

I've only been around the blog for a few years, but after helping you to produce several posts, I have a sense of just how much time and energy it takes to bring quality to this presentations of yours. Congratulations are in order for your constancy and commitment each week as you give your readers laughter and learning - six years of blood, sweat and tears for you, I'm sure!

I found Shady Dell Music & Memories as I began a simple search for information about my ancestral home. These past few years have instead become a new avenue of musical adventure and cultural celebration of not only an era I managed to miss growing up, but of new artists and trends as well. I look forward to more after you return, hopefully rejuvenated and rested. Bon Voyage!

  4. First off , let me start by saying , Happy 6th Birthday, SDM&M!!! Where does the time go? Shady, your blog has been so fun, entertaining and informative all these yrs. I've even had the pleasure of adding a little input in some of the past post. This has been very rewarding to me. All seriousness, the dell really didn't mean a thing to me the first yr. or so that I owned it until you and your blog brought it all to life for me. I have so enjoyed learning the history and meeting new friends that have ties to that house on Starcross Rd. What a thrill and whirlwind these last 6 yrs have been!
I loved that pic of the peanut toss! Little Shady was so cute! I can remember doing the peanut toss but the prize were the peanuts!!! I don't know if today's kids would appreciate that game as much I we did!
Tom, I hope you and your wife enjoy this much needed vacation. I hope you return with pics and interesting facts that all your followers can see and read all about! YOU WILL BE MISSED!

  5. Well, I heard there was a celebration going on over here, and thought I'd mosey over and offer a congratulations! Six years is a long time to publish as much info as you've put across! But, we're grateful for it. Your readers love the old and the new that you present Shady, and they will keep coming by to learn and for the great company you attract.

I don't come by much at all, but, I want to extend my congratulations, and wish you and Mrs. Shady a safe and exciting trip!

Oh, and, I think my cohort from the KardKorner will be stopping by in a bit.

P.S. I never did play peanut scramble, but, we did eat boiled peanuts when I was a kid!

  6. You were very cute. We have a peanut allergy in the family, so no. Have fun on your trip. I drove three hours yesterday, and that was enough for me.

  7. Are you packed yet? Hi Shady McKnight! And, a big congratulations on your 6th year of blogging! I must say, I've gotten a lot of valuable information, and enjoyment from your blog. You know I got you from Thisisme, and I, too miss the Sunday Snaps...you did good!

So, we're all (me and your great readers) grateful that you're still here, as, now you are the designated rock, soul, and other musical historian! Just when we thought we'd seen them all, you come through with a new and exciting group or a one-hit wonder! It keeps us coming back Shady! I appreciate how you are openminded about the various genres of music, appealing to all of us with different views and attitudes.

Thank you for your continued friendship, participation, and, incredible contributions to the 'blogworld'!

I wish a blessed and safe trip to you and Mrs. Shady! Don't worry about your blog...we'll all keep an eye on it for you! And, you will be missed Shady!

No peanut scramble for me either! We played jacks a lot though! Love your little black and white picture! What a cute little guy standing back, not too sure if he should jump in to it! lol! But, he's made his mark since!

    See you soon! ♫

  8. Congratulations on your anniversary. I've never heard of a peanut scramble before. I don't think they'd be allowed now because so many kids are allergic to peanuts. I think one of the great questions of this century is, Why are so many children allergic to peanuts and they weren't when we were children? I didn't know anyone allergic to peanuts when I was growing up. It boggles the mind. I hope you have a lovely trip. If you end up in the San Francisco area look for a younger version of me at Berkeley's math department. She's The Hurricane.

    Love,

Thank you all for your generous comments. I enjoyed reading them and greatly appreciate them. A few of you are among my oldest blog friends. Others have joined the SDM&M family in recent weeks and months. I am deeply grateful to all of you for your friendship and support.

I'm off then. I have changed my settings to require blog moderation for the next three weeks while I'm on break. I look forward to seeing all of you when I return. Take care, dear friends!

  12. Happy 6th Anniversary, Shady! I've been waiting anxiously for your post.

Six years is a long time to be faithful to any task, and you have done it with vigor and fun! You deserve a big ole' road trip to relax and gather up more fodder for blogdom.
I hope you have an absolutely fabulous time and come back barely able to contain your joy - blog it, brother.

I've never done the peanut scramble, but I can see where I could modify this into a Youth activity...hmmm...my brain is cooking up a plan.

We will miss you, hurry back!

Enjoy your chevy on the highway and have fun on your peanut scrambling break. ;) There are a lot of bloggers taking summer breaks it seems. Sounds like a decent idea. :)

  16. Tom You have given us six years of history, music and most important memories. You have earned this break my friend. Six years is a great accomplishment and you and every one that has helped you should be proud. I must admit I have been distracted and have not checked in much the last few months but do not ever doubt my loyalty, the Shady Dell is and all ways will be part of me. I will be here when you return to continue this walk we started. Remember what Shady Dell Knight says "More then a place, the Shady Dell was and will forever remain a state of mind". 17. Hi Tom, My computer got a virus so I've been out of it for awhile and using hubby's. Love the photo. You were a cute kid. What happened? Just joking. I never took part in a peanut scramble. It looks like a lot of fun for kids. I hope you have a wonderful time on your vacation. God bless.

  18. A road trip, how fun! I hope you see lots of amazing sites and have a great time!

Although I live in the Peanut Capital of the World, I can't say that I've ever participated in a peanut scramble ... unless you count scrambling to get the goobers tossed in the National Peanut Festival Parade!

Also, happy blog-iversary! Here's to many more years of introducing the masses to new music.
