My Favorite Beetle? ... Janie Junebug!

Dear friends, I am very proud

to announce that I have been given

The Versatile Blogger Award

by my dear friend Janie Junebug!

Janie is the well known, highly respected
and much loved power blogger who hosts

I am honored to receive this

special recognition, Janie.

Thank you very much!

In return, I'm giving you

the official Shady Del Knight

ZEAL OF APPROVAL

...a framed copy of

THE DELL RAT MOTTO!

The rules of The Versatile Blogger Award
require me to reveal 7 facts about myself.
With that in mind, I will now reveal
7 facts about myself.

7 Facts About Myself (Revealed)

1.) In 1982 I got a part time job as an astronaut
and became the first human to set foot on the sun,
at which time I uttered the now famous words

"OUCH! OUCH!
HOLY #$@&%* OUCH!!!"

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

2.) I later joined the circus and thrilled audiences
with my nude lion taming act.  That's right, folks.
None of those big cats wore a stitch of clothing.

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

3.) During a competitive eating contest in Reykjavík,
Iceland, I consumed 723 sardines in 5 minutes...
losing by a mere herring-and-a-half to heavy
favorite Vladimir Borisevski of the Ukraine.

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

4.) My shrink diagnosed me with
Narcissistic Personality Disorder
and called me conceited. "That's
impossible," I told him. "Conceit
is a flaw and I have no flaws."

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

5.) Sigmund said he can tell that I'm self-absorbed
because all my sentences begin with "I."
I laughed. I cried. I denied it.

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

6.) Fraud Freud told me I say "I" so often that he
named my condition "Irritable Vowel Syndrome."

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

7.) He told me I'm immature, bordering on infantile.
He gave me a set of mental blocks to play with.

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

That doesn't count as 7 things?
Okay... no kidding aside...
here are 3 true facts about me.

1.) When I worked as a television announcer and newsman
I was sometimes called upon to fill in for other on-air
personalities when they weren't available. One day the
host of our farm report called in sick and I was asked
to sub for him. I had to emcee a live segment devoted
to the annual State Farm Show and interview a local
farmer about his prize winning Black Angus.

To my shock and dismay the farmer brought the huge beast
with him to the studio! I knew absolutely nothing about
farming. The only thing I knew about cows was what
I learned from watching Borden's ice cream commercials.

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

I thought animal husbandry was a practice that
could get you up to five years in the slammer.

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

To make a long story even longer, my live
interview turned out to be a whole lotta bull...

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

...but at least I didn't give viewers a bum steer.

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

I took the bull by the horns and muddled through the
Q & A session without sounding like a complete idiot.
When the bovine left the studio I hollered
"Where's the BEEF?"

(BA-DUM-BUMP)

2.) When I worked in television entertainment I once
played the part of "The Professor" in a live televised
Gilligan's Island comedy sketch at my station.

3.) As of this month it has been 22 years since
I've had a drink of alcohol, a cigarette or a drug.
Shady Del Knight smokes a pipe. I never did.

Now it's time for me to acknowledge a few other
deserving and "versatile" bloggers. The rules call
for me to name 15 people but I am aware that
some of you have declared your blogs award
free zones. Others have received blog awards
from me in the past.  Therefore, I think it will
mean more to each recipient if I give the award
to only three people.  These three are new
SDM&M followers who have impressed me
not only with their blogging versatility but
also with their loyal friendship and their
willingness to engage me in friendly
conversation.  I call it coming out
to play and it's important to me.
Let's find out who they are!

(DRUM ROLL)

...and The Versatile Blogger

Award goes to.....

(SHADY NERVOUSLY OPENS THE ENVELOPE
WITH CLAMMY, TREMBLING HANDS)

Abigail and Daisy at Sweeter Gets The Journey

and Allie-Millie at Writing The Rapids

Congratulations to these three versatile, sociable
and very deserving bloggers and thank you again,
dear Janie Junebug, for tapping me for this award.
I value your friendship, Janie. You are prolific,
terrific and part of the solution. I invite all my
readers to follow and support Janie's blog -

Have a Shady day!

  3. Congrats to you, Shady! You most definitely are a Versatile Blogger!

And now, let me put on my long, sequined gown: Thank you, thank you...you are too kind...I'd like to thank all the little people: short and chronologically youthful, who help me come up with daily rants, ravings and observations....and to my family, who are slightly twisted and a little off keel....

What fun! (I don't know the rules of blog awards...but I'll figure it out!). Thanks, again, dear friend, and congrats to the others.

Have a great day! See you on the flipside.

They like you... they really like you! :)

It was nice of you to thank all the little people you used and stepped on as you clawed your way to the top! :)

I'm fighting the battle of the bulge and practically needed a shoehorn to get into my sequined gown for the awards show. :)

To top it off, Heather Locklear wore the same one! :)

Go to this site to read the VBA rules:

      http://versatilebloggeraward.wordpress.com/vba-rules/

Thank you very much for coming over, dear Cherdo, and once again thank you for being such a great (and chatty) new friend. I love your sense of humor. Have a fantastic week!

P.S. - I found one more VBA rule. If, for any reason, you are unable to complete your reign, the title goes to the runner-up.

    1. Hi, dear Shelly! Thank you very much for the kind words, my friend! I remember several months ago you hinted that you planned to close shop at least for a while. Your withdrawal from regular publishing will be a loss to the blogging world but it's comforting to know you will still be out and about visiting our sites. Your ongoing loyal friendship is very much appreciated.

Next month I will also be taking a break from blogging. As you well know, it is beneficial to get off the treadmill occasionally, do some traveling, clear your head and recharge your batteries.

Thank you again for your faithful friendship and support over the years, dear Shelly. Have a happy Sunday and have a great week ahead!

Thank you so very much for another award, Shady. Im so honored! You and your blog have introduced me to new ideas of blogging in the way that you are very friendship driven, and that is something i treasure very much.

    1. Hi, dear Abigail (and Daisy)! Thank you very much for swinging over this morning! It makes me happy to know that I gave you a few smiles and laughs to start your Kansas day. That's what I'm here for.

I figured you'd have something to say about Gilligan's Island since you and your fur baby are fans of the series. My story is true. I was chosen by one of our veejays to play the role of The Professor in a brief live skit on his show.

Abigail, nobody deserves The Versatile Blogger Award more than you. Your blog is a wonderland of exciting images, music and poetry. It is always a pleasure to join you at Sweeter Gets The Journey. Moreover, I picked you for this award for the other reason I stated. You are friendly and outgoing. You are always eager to share yourself and communicate with me, something relatively few bloggers are able or willing to do. That makes a huge difference to me. I am very happy and proud to have you as a friend, Abigail!

Congratulations on your VBA and have a wonderful week ahead, Abigail. Please give Daisy a hug and a smooch for me!

    1. Hi, Toni! Thank you very much for sharing some laughs with me today, dear friend! I remember all the "Huh?" comments I used to get whenever I'd make a Dialing For Dollars call to somebody in Hagerstown, MD, a town on the very fringe of our coverage map. Most people way down there watched their new local WHAG station and didn't have the foggiest idea who I was, where I was calling from or why I was bothering them at that hour of the morning. Needless to say, they didn't know the amount in the jackpot, a fact necessary for them to win. I remember one lady taking a wild guess and saying "25,000'! (Not quite, LOL.)

Thank you for acknowledging my 22 years on the wagon, dear friend. That means a lot to me and I can't wait till I can say it's been 50 years. Well, I think I can wait but you know what I mean.

Thank you again for your visit and comment, dear friend Toni, and enjoy the week ahead!

Well, since our NPD and IVS friend Shady slipped through the revelation part of this official award with a good deal of hilarious legerdemain, I will now reveal 7 real and true facts about Shady I've learned from his blog (based loosely on dictionary definitions of "versatile"):
    Shady Del Knight - (Revealed):
    1. Capable of doing many things competently.... (From researching oft-ignored and under-lauded musical artists, to providing back stories to famous ones, to supporting friends in times of trouble - he does it all with enthusiasm and authenticity.)

    2. Having varied uses or serving many functions: "The most versatile of vegetables is the tomato" (Craig Claiborne)..... (He's better than a tomato! He's our friend, our teacher, a promoter of the arts and always, always, to our delight - ever the comedian!)

    3. Biology: Capable of moving freely in all directions, as the antenna of an insect, the toe of an owl, or the loosely attached anther of a flower...... (You switch with ease between representing the best of such disparate musical styles as doo-wop to heavy metal, from girl groups to soloists. We tune in each week to his blog, not knowing what special treat from his flexible mind awaits us.)

    4. Zoology: Able to turn forwards and backwards: versatile antennae....(His blog looks back at the Shady Dell from its very genesis and forward to Dell rats everywhere who are still influenced by her special place in their lives. He personally themes his blog with everything from music and films of his youth to his favorite television series at the present time. In other words, his 'antennae' are always searching for the next creative idea.)

    5. Capable of or adapted for turning easily from one to another of various tasks, fields of endeavor, etc.....(His life's road, as for many of us, has had many climbs and descents, twists and turns. He's weathered them all and not only survived but also thrived.)

    6. Botany: Attached at or near the middle so as to swing freely, as an anther....(He doesn't go off the deep end with opinions that could offend by going too far in one direction - staying within the bounds of decency and good will, all the while accepting any of his readers who are genuine in their interest.)

    7. Multi-talented, able to perform and move with ease from one thing to another.....(From teenage athlete, to broadcast journalist, to entertainment producer, to blogger extraordinaire - Shady has had a remarkable, flexible and energetic history.)

    Versatile blogger indeed! Congratulations, Tom!

    1. Hello hello hello, dear Katheen! I'm all verklempt after reading your stupendous comment. Thank you, dear friend! Leave it to someone like you who has known me for years to come up with a 7-list that sums up what I have been trying to do here for nearly 6 years here on SDM&M. I deeply appreciate this!

To be called better than a tomato is quite and honor indeed. :) I like to dream big. Someday I hope to surpass the zucchini. :) Actually, the tomato is not a vegetable. It is a fruit that THINKS it's a vegetable. (See, I'm also the smartest person in the room. It's a good thing I'm not conceited or people might take that statement the wrong way. :)

You compare me to the antenna of an insect, able to move freely in all directions. I don't have an anther for that :) but last night I had a weird dream involving the toe of an owl. (Let's not go there! :)

It's nice of you to suggest that I am capable or adapted to turning easily from one to another of various tasks, fields of endeavor, etc. I'm afraid Mrs. Shady would not agree with you. She calls me a jackass of all trades. :) By the way, it's our 19th wedding anniversary today so I'd like to give a shout out to Mrs. Shady and thank her for one happy year of marriage. Just kidding, my dear. Just kidding.

In item #6, Kathleen, you compare me to a freely swinging anther. That's exactly what got me in trouble most of my life - until 22 years ago! :)

Dear, dear Kathleen. How sweet you are for staying up late (until 4 am) to write this extraordinary piece. It literally brings tears to my eyes to have someone like you recognize these qualities in me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Kathleen.

      God bless!

  15. Wow, you're a real guy Friday, aren't you Shady! I can truly imagine you as the professor on Gilligan's Island! He was the only sane person on the show. And, I did like the show!

I think the versatile blogger award fits you well, because you are a very versatile person. You can jump from one genre of music to another, providing not only history of the artist, but, the technical history and history that goes into production as well. And, sweeten it with a few funnies about yourself. That's how we learn to express and deliver the goods to our readers...and, you, my friend, do deliver!

So, congrats to you, and the bum steer you rode in on. ! LOL! I really do mean it, Shady! Have a great weekend! Sorry, I'm late.♫
