From Austria With Love: V-Day Songs That Will Leave You Shaken and Stirred!

This Valentine's Day

I proudly present one of the finest

female vocalists in the world.

Her voice touches me and

moves me like no other.

Austrian singer Sandra Schleret is a veteran of the
modern gothic symphonic heavy metal movement.
In her native country Sandra fronted the bands
Dreams of Sanity and Siegfried and she has
been a guest vocalist on other projects.

As you might recall, Sandra Schleret was featured
in my Beauty and the Beasts post last Halloween.
To refresh your memory, here is the bewitching
Sandra singing for the German metal band
Soulslide as they perform "Into Despair".

"Into Despair" - Soulslide
featuring Sandra Schleret
(from 2004 demo Lost in You)

In 2006 Sandra joined Elis, a goth metal band
from the Central European nation of Liechtenstein.
Sandra replaced Sabine D√ľnser who had died as a
result of a cerebral hemorrhage earlier that year.

In 2007 Sandra was lead singer for Elis at the
annual Metal Female Voices Fest in Belgium.
Listen to Sandra's impassioned intro as she
remembers Sabine and performs one of Elis's
best known songs, "Show Me The Way."

featuring Sandra Schleret (live at the
2007 Metal Female Voices Fest in Belgium)

THE MAIN EVENT!

In 2009 Elis released their 4th and final album.
They called it Catharsis and for good reason.
It was cathartic for the band to work on the
album following the tragic death of Sabine.

The album was also cathartic for Sandra
because she suffered a serious illness
prior to joining Elis and there was
doubt she would ever sing again.

My Main Event is "Rainbow," a track from
Catharsis. "Rainbow" is a triumph, a recording
worthy of becoming a classic ballad and used
as the love theme of a major motion picture.
Listen now as the soulful Sandra Schleret
and Elis perform one of the greatest
love songs of all time, "Rainbow."

Fate touched my life
Led you my way --
Within a heartbeat
I was caught by your light

The surface shivered
Unveiled so unexpected beauty
True and fateful bright

You are the thought that covers me tonight
Beautiful soul -- sacred ways of life
Unfold my wings -- reach out for your light
To shelter you from pain tonight

A flare in time
Gathered our souls
As they touched gently
Sacred ways of fate

Love entered my life
So unexpected though so welcome
Living in your eyes

And though I know my fight begins
My soul's melting within

You are the thought that covers me tonight
Beautiful soul -- sacred ways of life
Unfold my wings -- reach out for your light
My heart it breaks for you tonight

My heart steady beats for you (eternal on, eternal on)
No despairing darkness can blind my sight
Show me your colours -- my ray of light...
I'm burning bright -- alive!

You are the thought that covers me tonight
Beautiful soul -- sacred ways of life
Unfold my wings -- reach out for your light
Never forsake -- it's once in a life...

Have a Shady day...

  and a happy Valentine's Day!

  1. Good morning Shadykins, you old romantic you. There are many pleasures to coming along to your Blog. The humour, the friendship and, of course, the music! You have given us so many names that we have never heard if of, but, nevertheless, get the chance to enjoy. Sandra is one of those. I can understand why you have chosen her for this Valentine post. The words of that song are just so beautiful , as is her voice. So clear and pure. Thank you for sharing her with us today and, look, I'm first at the love party today ! Smooches.

    1. Hallo, dear Thisisme! Thank you for being the early bird today, my special friend. I'm elated to know that you appreciate the clarity and purity of Sandra's vocals and that you were touched by the beauty and lyrics of "Rainbow." I could easily imagine it as the theme of a romantic motion picture, couldn't you?

Thank you again for helping me spread the spirit of love and romance as we lead up to Valentine's Day 2014. I'm sure you've seen Karo's new post which was another special treat for the ears and the heart. I hope you are having a marvelous Thursday, dear friend Thisisme. Big hugs and even bigger smooches to you!

  2. Well, rats, I just left a comment and it was eaten by blogger. One of the things I love about your posts is how they introduce me to music and musicians I would not have known about otherwise. She has a hauntingly beautiful voice and is a perfect selection for this day. Thank you for all the work you do on these posts for us, my friend, and happy Valentine's Day to you and Mrs. Shady!

    1. Hi, Shelly! Thank you very much for joining me today and especially for the lovely compliment. It's funny. Some posts (and I know you can relate to this) take a considerable amount of time and effort to produce. This post simply flowed out of me because I was driven by passion evoked by Sandra. I am riveted to the screen, unable to turn away, whenever I listen to her or watch her perform. If you saw that clip of her live performance in Belgium you are perhaps as captivated as I was by her singing and her mesmerizing dance movements. Sandra is indeed a witchy woman.

Thank you again for coming, dear friend Shelly. Happy Valentine's Day to you and your husband!

    1. Hi, Jeanie! Thank you very much for taking a look and a listen today. I'm thrilled to know you appreciate Sandra's vocals as much as I do. I can't listen to her songs without becoming misty eyed. I also appreciate that you are touched by the dramatic back story of how young lead singer Sabine died and was replaced in Elis by Sandra who had also suffered a serious, potentially career ending illness prior to joining the band and recording Catharsis.

Thank you again for being such a great friend, dear Jeanie. Happy Valentine's Day to you and Dodger!

  4. This is good! One of my little secrets is that I love a little metal and hard rock music every now and then.
But oh my! what a wonder this is! I've never heard of any of what you wrote about but I did enjoy it. 'Rainbow' was brilliant. Her vocal range and strength is AMAZING.
    Another awesome post,
Happy Valentines Day from me and Daisy! :)

    1. Hi, Abigail! How nice of you to drop by, dear friend! You and I have many things in common and one of them is eclectic tastes. I am delighted to know that you enjoy dabbling in harder and heavier music when the mood strikes. Learning to appreciate many different types of things expands our horizons and enriches our lives. I'm thrilled that you and I both love Sandra and consider "Rainbow" to be a brilliant love song.

Thank you once again, dear friend Abigail. Here's wishing you and your darling Daisy a very happy Valentine's Day!

  7. Yep! I am shaken and stirred!

Sandra S. has the voice of an angel especially in the song , "Into Despair". I remember her very well in your Halloween post because she was my pick! I do believe that song is still my favorite on this post as well although the lyrics are hard to beat in the beautiful "Rainbow" love song!

Thank you for exposing us to all types of music. I do enjoy heavy metal and hope there are electric guitars in heaven! LOL!

    Happy Valentines Day, Shady!!!

    1. Hi, Toni! Happy Valentine's Day to you, my dear friend. Thanks for coming over to experience From Austria With Love starring Sandra Schleret. I'm so glad you enjoy this type of music when I present it. Wouldn't it be awful if heaven is "unplugged"? (LOL) I hope the rules allow for electric guitars.

I agree with you about "Into Despair." When I watch and listen I fall through the looking glass into another reality. It sets the stage for the other two songs and I remain under a spell until Sandra sings her final word in "Rainbow."

Thank you again, dear friend Toni, for your kind visit and comment. Once again happy V-Day to you and yours!

  8. Happy VD to you and Mrs. S today! Wait, that doesn't read very well does it..hmmm...I mean, I hope you both had a lovely Valentines Day down in the warm sunshine! This day is all about sweetness and cuteness and big hearts. But this music is not all gooey and Hallmarkie...it's intense and sure hits right into the heart. Her voice is so strong, yet has a haunting quality and I remember it from Halloween. Yet, it so fits with this holiday as well. Listening to it and watching the videos can cause palpitations! A lot like love! Hope your day was great and your weekend is full of fun!

    1. Hi, YaYa! Happy VD? (LOL) Shady's warped sense of humor is rubbing off on you. Yessum, we had a nice Valentine's celebration and went out to dinner, but we needed to do it Wednesday because Mrs. Shady had a long day of work at the hospital yesterday. Bummer, right?

You have the knack, dear friend. Every time you visit my blog you have the ability to size up the post and get the gist and then express yourself brilliantly in your comment. I like that. I like that you understand why I was compelled to use these passionate songs by Sandra and her bands as my V-Day piece. I like that you appreciated the strength, intensity and haunting quality of her voice and experienced the same palpitations I do. Mission accomplished!

Thank you very much for your visit and excellent comment, dear friend YaYa. Please take care of yourself up there in the land of snow and cold. God bless!

  9. Hi Shady. Please excuse my tardiness-it's been a busy week again. Just can't seem to get everything done. I hope you've had fun and romantic Valentine's Day.

I remember this lady you featured before, and I was able to listen to at least some of each of these songs. I have to tell you, the final song is chilling! The lyrics are one thing, but, putting Sandra's voice and the music with them, makes it totally enchanting. It's like nothing I've ever heard, and, I mean that honestly. The stories and events surrounding this music is heart wrenching. So, it has been found that love and heartbreak do walk hand in hand, as does love and happiness. The writer of this song surely had to have written it tearfully ( I would have cried all the way through writing it). It is really beautiful! Your post is well written, straight to the heart!

We're having a warming trend in Fort Worth this weekend and our Scootie is in residence for a few days. I know it's late, but, who knows when I will be on line tomorrow! Thank you for your kind and gracious to mine and Karo's blogs. We really enjoy hearing from you...Nashville Cat! lol! Have a wonderful weekend Shady! ♥

    1. Hello, dear Suzanne! First of all, thank you very much for staying up late to comment on my post. That's the sign of a great friend. Secondly, this is another extraordinary comment from you and I'm not just saying that because you happen to agree with me about Sandra and the music I posted. However, I am very pleasantly surprised that you do agree with me. I can't tell you how much it means to me that you were deeply touched by the words, melody and performance of "Rainbow." I think the song is made even greater by the fact that Sandra renders it in her thick Austrian accent. "Chilling" is a great word for "Rainbow" because you can feel the pain and sadness mixed with joy - all the emotions stirred by true love. It's easy to imagine "Rainbow" as the theme song of a romantic movie, don't you agree?

Yessum, I learned that Scootie Potter was in the house after visiting Karo's blog. I'm glad you appreciated my reference to the Spoonful song "Nashville Cats." It's nice of you to show interest in Karo's blog and take time to read the comments left by me and Thisisme. Again, you are demonstrating what goes into being a great friend.

You guys are overdue for warmer weather. A warming trend is also underway here in the Tampa Bay region and it promises to be a delightful weekend. I wish the same for you, Karo and Scootie. Thank you again for your late visit and superb comments, dear friend Suzanne. Take care and I'll chat with you again soon!

  10. Happy Valentines shady! It trips me out that you like both 60s soul and r'n'b as well as Euro heavy metal! But its not good to stick with one musical style i guess. Sandra has an amazing voice! so powerful!

    1. Hi, dear Catherine! Thank you very much for popping in as your day winds to a close in the land down under.

I pride myself on having eclectic tastes. I don't know how but I can listen to a tender doo-wop ballad and a bone crushing heavy metal anthem back-to-back and appreciate both equally. I'm so glad you enjoyed the power of Sandra's voice in these three songs.

I hope you and your boy had a wonderful Valentine's Day and I thank you again for your kind visit and comments. Good night and have a delightful summer Sunday, dear friend Cat!

  11. I enjoyed all the songs, but especially 'Rainbow." It is haunting and beautiful. Sandra's voice is amazing. I love the words, "You are the thought that covers me tonight. Beautiful soul -sacred ways of life." Nice to see you went out for dinner with your wife for Valentine's Day. Hubby and I cooked a great breakfast together this morning. I was in charge of pancakes. love and hugs.

    1. Hi, dear Belle! Happy day after Valentine's Day to you, my special friend. I'm very pleased to know that you appreciated the recording of "Rainbow" by Sandra and Elis. The lyrics alone are beautiful poetry. When you add Sandra's haunting, bewitching voice (and Austrian accent) it is one of the most touching love ballads I've ever heard. I hope you will remember the words and melody of "Rainbow" and play it in your mind as I often do. As the name of the album implies, it's cathartic. It has the power to calm, soothe, comfort and heal.

I'm glad to know you and your husband cooked a breakfast together. I'm sure it was an experience you'll long remember.

Thank you very much for your kind visit and comments, dear friend Belle. Please take good care of yourself and I hope to connect with you again soon. Good night and God bless!
