Visit & Tour "New Dellie" This Weekend!

Hi there! I'm Toto...
Shady's dog.  My
so-called "master"
threw me a bone
and let me be guest
blogger. I wanna
give a shout out to
my buddy Heathcliff
way down yonder at

Hey, I got some exciting news!

History turns a page this weekend when the newly renovated Shady Dell will be officially unveiled to the public during a two day open house!

Joining us once again with details is Dell owner, Violet Hill Bureau Chief and Senior New Dellie Correspondent Toni Deroche. Toni?

Hello again, Shady...uh, I mean Toto!

A new chapter is set to begin at the Shady Dell
the former hangout for teenagers located at
1501 Starcross Road in Spring Garden Township,
 York, Pennsylvania.

In 1991 the Dell closed its doors after 46 years of
operation. The Dell, and a piece of York History,
 is now for sale!

The Deroche Brothers, Tom and Bob, current owners
for the past six years, started renovation work at the
 Dell in 2010.

It's now completed and everyone is welcome to
come up the hill and see the results.

The Dell combines the best of the old and new.

Come see the brand new Shady Dell
during our open house this weekend.

Explore all three floors of the house.

 Stroll the grounds.

Make sure to poke your head inside the old barn.

Soak up some atmosphere in the old dance hall.

Recently cleaned, it's looking better than it has in decades.

Read the graffiti on the Dell's famous Wonder Wall.

Reminisce about the happy days and good times
 with other Dell alumni.

Join us at the Shady Dell open house
this Saturday, April 14th, and Sunday, April 15th,
 from 1-4:00 p.m. each day.

 See you there!

Thanks, Toni!

P.S. - Maps and travel directions to the Dell from England, France, Poland and South Africa are available upon request.

Oh... and tell 'em Toto sent ya! ;)

Have a Shady Totolly Toto day!

  1. Well hello, Toto! I've been hoping we would hear from you one day.

You've brought us some great news and we hope you and your humans will get to go to the open house.

It is beautiful, and I'm sure John and Helen would be so happy to know how lovingly it's been restored.

It's so very special that the grafitti wall has been left alone- what a monument to all the Dell Rats.

It's been wonderful reading you today, Toto. Please give Shady our best!

  2. Shelly - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

  3. Hi Toto! It is so lovely to meet you! Thank you for the tour of the magical Dell. If I were near PA, I surely would stop in, especially to have a closer look at the wonder wall, and dance around the barn.

  4. Jenny - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

  5. Hi Toto,
It's about time Tom gave you some time on here. We like those pictures and could really spend some time sniffing around that place. No telling what has been buried there over the years.
Take care and stay in charge of things there.
    Rocky and Soffie
    Your fan club

  6. Odie - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

  7. Rocky - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

    Soffie - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

  8. Toto, you brought a smile to my face and warmed my heart seeing you appear on The Shady Dell! The photos are wonderful, I am wondering if we were to enlarge the graffiti wall would we find an autograph from Tom?

So thank you for making your appearance and I hope we have many more posts from your paws to come!

  9. Sush - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

  10. I think Toto should get a treat for being so good to us ;)

it's lovely that the public get to view the newly renovated Shady Dell. Will you be visiting Tom? Hope you had a lovely Easter weekend!

    Emma x

  11. Ah Toto - if only I weren't clear across the country! I'd love to get a peek at the "new" Shady Dell! It looks beautiful and proud. Perhaps you'll get Tom to share some pictures of the open house with us? Until then - be a good dog.

  12. Emma - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! (Tom will be there in spirit.)

karen - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! (Yessum, "Master" is planning a pic post of candids taken at the open house this weekend.)

  13. Woof, woof, Toto! I'm Heathcliff, your South African fan checking in while Desiree's back is turned. She's not blogging AT ALL at the moment, so I can never get near the computer anymore, but I saw her reading a card from Mr Shady himself and he'd alluded to a special post on Tuesday (today!), so I sneaked in here to have a peek. I'm so glad I did. We've heard all about you, Toto! You certainly are a dashing dresser! I see you've adopted Mr Shady's pipe smoking ways. I think I'll pass as I know it would make me cough!
That Dell pad looks mighty nice! So many big rooms to explore and such large grounds in which to enjoy some major romps! It's just a bit too far for all of us to hitch a ride to, though, Toto, so we won't be able to meet you there and sniff all those trees together. Pity! But, it has been good chatting to you on the sly. Just please don't tell Desiree as she might be a bit put out knowing I've come online today. I must say she's been amazing since she decided to take a break! She plays with us even more than usual and we've been having the best time, ever! She's teaching us all sorts of things and has us on a new raw food diet, which we LOVE! It's raw meat and bones. Man, we thought we'd died & gone to heaven the first couple of days, now we know it's for real!. We're doing GREAT on it! Never looked happier, healthier and more robust.
I must dash along now. I hear Desiree in the kitchen selecting our meaty dinner! Yum!!!
    Heathcliff xx

  14. Heathcliff - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

I'm so glad to hear from you, good buddy! Thanks for sitting in while Desiree's taking a paws from blogging. PAWS, get it? (LOL) Yes, I picked up the pipe habit from Shady. The other day I called the local tobacconist and asked if he has Prince Albert in a can. He said "yes" and I told him he'd better let him out before he suffocates! (LOL) Glad you're enjoying your new diet. At least one of us has healthy habits. Tell Desiree not to be a stranger, okay?

  15. They did a great job with the renovation and I just love the Wonder Wall. So nice to see they kept that. Hope your week is going swell sir :)

  16. Amber Blue Bird - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!
    (and another WOOF! for Oliver)

  17. Dear Toto, Woof Woof! How wonderful to see you here today. I was beginning to wonder if you really existed! I must apologise to you for bringing up the rear like this, but it's a long way from England. The renovations look wonderful. I was also looking at the Graffitti wall to see if I could see your master's signature anywhere. He was probably far too well brought up to be scrawling on walls! How lovely that Heathcliffe also found time to pop across and leave such a clever comment. I hope that his mistress will be coming back to see us some time soon. Sending you a big hug little Toto. Woof Woof! By the way, Sir Alfred is coming over to see us this weekend, so I'll tell him that I've been speaking to you.

  18. Thisisme - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!
    (and another WOOF! for Alfred)

  19. Hi, Toto!

I'm glad to see you're giving Tom a break---and he's giving us one, too! It's a pleasure to see a fresh snout taking over the blog, along with the NEW, improved Dell! The care taken in the preservation of many parts of the property really enhances our memories of our home away from home. It's great to see people who have given so much consideration to the memories of the previous owners, John and Helen, and all of us, the Ettlines' "kids", who imprinted our energies there as well. Toto, I would so much like to meet you there this weekend. I'd even stop along the way and pick up some CMP's for us (chocolate, marshallow and peanut sundaes) as a tribute to Helen and our past there. I don't know if Tom ever brought you there, but there are lots of trees for you, Heathcliffe, and all your fuzzy friends. I notice Tom's corny but enjoyable humor has rubbed off on you. Please tell him you deserve a nice lean steak for the excellent job you've done. Be careful not to get your fine threads dirty. And if you have any steak left, ask him for a people bag.

    Woof! Woof!

  20. Ron - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!
    (PEOPLE bag - good one!)

  21. I wish I lived in the area, Shady! I mean Toto. I would be there with bells on. (Get it?)

They have done a magnificent job on the house. It is gorgeous. May everyone had a fantastic time at the reunion!

  22. Belle - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!
(I get it. Good one! WOOF!)

  23. great post Toto, two paws up, giggle. xo P.S> I'm leaving a comment from my other blog today

  24. Katie - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!
(Two paws up? That's quite a compliment!)

  25. Toto you old Dell dog , you have Harley my black lab glued to the computer screen. Let my good friend Shady Know that I plan to be at the Dell both days and will try to give him a Dell Rat report and pictures. Sure wish you could both be here, I know you will be in your heart. This is a big weekend for all Dell Rats and we have waited a long time to see that our beloved Dell would be safe for many years to come. Again I say thank you Toni. A Dell Rat All Ways

  26. Greg - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

    Harley - WOOF! WOOF! WOOF!

  27. That is one cool place Toto! What memories it has! I hope they have a good turnout at the open house. You did a good job, great photos...what a job the renovation must have been.

We're doing a bit of renovation's why I'm running late this week. Switching the music room and living room out to accommodate the music equipment.

Thanks for the Dell update. Will see you soon!

You talkin' to me?
