The New Math: 4 Tops + 3 Vandellas = 15 Dell Smashes

Two of Motown's most successful vocal groups,
the Four Tops and Martha & the Vandellas...

furnished no fewer than 15 songs that earned positions on my list of The 200 Greatest Hits of the Shady Dell!

Let's count 'em down!

#191. "You Keep Running Away" - Four Tops (September '67)

#187. "7 Rooms of Gloom" - Four Tops (June '67)

#183. "Loving You is Sweeter Than Ever" - Four Tops (June '66)

Songs by the Tops and the Vandellas provided the music score for my Shady Dell adventures from the fall of 1965 when I was a new face in the crowd until September 1967 when I left town as a veteran Dell rat.

#175. "Bernadette" - Four Tops (March '67)

#169. "I'm Ready for Love" - Martha & the Vandellas (November '66)

#152. "If You Don't Want My Love" - Four Tops (September '67)

#146. "My Baby Loves Me" - Martha & the Vandellas (February '66)

#142. "Reach Out I'll be There" - Four Tops (September '66)

The Four Tops and Martha & the Vandellas released many 2-siders, records with great songs back-to-back. Those 45s yielded some of the greatest Dell killer bees of the mid 60s.

They included "Third Finger, Left Hand" by the Vandellas which was played as heavily as A side "Jimmy Mack"...

and the irresistible "I Got A Feeling," considered in some northern soul circles to be the greatest of all Four Tops songs!

Other fine killer bees by these groups included "I’ll Turn To Stone" by the Four Tops, the wonderful Tops' slow dance ballad "If You Don’t Want My Love," and the Vandellas' sensational snuggle song "Love Makes Me Do Foolish Things."

#134. "Love Makes Me Do Foolish Things" - Martha & the Vandellas (December '65)

#120. "I'll Turn to Stone" - Four Tops (July '67)

#87. "Something About You" - Four Tops (November '65)

#64. "I Got a Feeling" - Four Tops (March '67)

#60. "Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over)" - Four Tops (February '66)

The Dell girls in particular loved to sing along to Vandellas records while they danced together in pairs or threes.

#58 "Third Finger Left Hand" - Martha & the Vandellas (March '67)

#48. "Jimmy Mack" - Martha & the Vandellas (March '67)

Terrific as they were prolific, the Four Tops and Martha and the Vandellas were two of the principal Motown memory makers that contributed heavily to the Shady Dell soundtrack of the mid 60s. The place just wouldn't have been the same without them!

Have a Shady day!
